Abigail Ashe is the daughter of Lord Peter Ashe, Governor of the Province of Carolina.

Biography[]

Background[]

Abigail lived in London for the majority of her life. She has fond memories of Lady Miranda Hamilton from her childhood[1]. After her father was named Governor of Carolina and moved to Charles Town, she remained in London for school[2]

Season Two[]

Abigail Ashe is captured aboard the Good Fortune, en route to Charles Town, Province of Carolina, from England by Ned Low.[3] Low kills the crew of the merchant ship and burns it to cover his tracks. Low is later killed by Charles Vane, who in turn intends to ransom her in exchange for £250,000. Vane tells Eleanor of his plans and shows her Abigail asleep in her cell. He explains that Low's crew kept her sedated[4]

When Abigail awakes in her cell and finds that a piece of bread has been left for her. When she inspects it however, she finds that it has been infested by maggots. Despite the maggots, she eats the bread.

Vane later arrives in her cell and introduces himself. He calls her his guest and she will be treated as such so long as she follows his instructions. When he asks if she understands, she replies that Low instructed her not to talk. Vane promises that she no longer needs to worry about him. Abigail asks him how he can be sure and Vane tells her that he cut Low's head off, which Abigail is happy about.

Vane then begins asking Abigail questions about her father's wealth, such as the total value of his estate, the number of slaves he has, and the number of rooms in his house. Abigail explains that she doesn't know because she's been at school in London for years. Vane then asks if they are close, and when she is confused, explains that he is asking if there is any reason he should expect not to be paid the ransom. Abigail responds by saying Vane is asking if her father loves her, and says her father will pay. Vane then instructs her to write a ransom note to her father, stating that she is Vane's prisoner and no harm will come to her so long as Vane is paid the 250,000 pounds. Vane promises the next time he makes contact will be when he arrives in Charles Town. Vane promises that if the sum is not paid, or he suspects foul play, he will kill Abigail and throw her body into the bay.

That night, Pastor Lambrick berates Miranda Barlow for trying to help Eleanor Guthrie and by extension her pirate associates. Lambrick tells her that one pirate killed another (Vane and Low) to impress her, and that it was also to steal the daughter of Peter Ashe, Lord Governor of the Carolina Colony. Miranda then remembers Abigail, and struggles to recall her name before she is able to remember it[2]

Miranda then rides out to Nassau to tell Flint of this and convince him to alter his plans. Miranda warns Flint learns she is being held in Nassau's fort to try and dissuade him from the attack and show him a path towards their original plan of reconciliation. He is then attacked by Vane once Miranda leaves[5]. The two stop when Eleanor fires a gun at them. He and Miranda then explain their plan to return her to her father in exchange for trying to win his allegiance in turning Nassau into a self-governing colony to Eleanor, Richard Guthrie and Vane. Flint promises to call off the attack in exchange for Abigail, but Vane refuses and demands Flint's ship. When Vane leaves, Eleanor tries to convince him, but he refuses again. Eleanor then goes back up and tells them that Vane will release her by nightfall. Vane refuses to give her up or go with Flint's plan, so Eleanor Guthrie sneaks into the fort. After sleeping with Vane, she proceeds to steal the keys to the dungeons and tunnel gates and finds Abigail[6].

Eleanor gives Abigail the letter from Miranda, and Abigail is shocked that Lady Hamilton is on the island, recalling her face. Furthermore she is surprised about the rescue, as Vane had promised that no harm would come to her, and she is afraid of Captain Flint due to his reputation. Eleanor assures that she will be safe and smuggles her out, but not before Vane discovers what she has done. He catches up to them at one of the tunnel gates, begging Eleanor to come back to him with Abigail, warning that his crew will kill him for allowing Eleanor to dupe them. Eleanor locks the gate and flees with Abigial. At the Tavern, Abigail meets with Miranda Barlow, whom she recognizes as Lady Hamilton, a former friend of her father. She then meets Flint, who identifies himself also as one of her father's old friends, Lieutenant James McGraw[1].

Miranda and Flint escort her to Charles Town. During the voyage, she keeps a diary where she reveals stories she was told about the pirates are being shattered, as she is seeing them as people and not monsters. She observes the pirates, and she wonders whether or not their seemingly benign and civilized behavior is true or just a ruse, and that they are all monsters waiting to be let loose by the largest monster of all - Flint. This image of the pirates being monsters continue to erode over the course of the voyage, especially when she watches them grieve over the accidental death of their crew mate Nicholas

She also appears to develop an attraction to Billy Bones, who seems to be likewise attracted to her. She thinks he seems out of place amongst the other pirates. During dinner, she remarks to Flint that Flint tells her of how Billy's past as the son of Levelers, political protestors against impressment. was impressed as a child and rescued by him. However, he couldn't bear to return to his father after killing the man who kidnapped him, and instead joined the pirates' crew.

As they get closer to Charles Town, she begs Flint and Miranda to turn around once they drop her off, as she fears her father will retaliate against Flint, for it was Captain Flint who murdered Lord Alfred Hamilton, Miranda's father-in-law. Abigail says that it was this event that turned her father into such a committed pirate hunter, for it was clear that Alfred was hunted down with great forethought and malice and executed, an act that was incompatible with civilized society. She said her father dedicated himself to eradicating piracy, and said that there would be law in the Americas once Captain Flint swung over the city. Abigail says she appreciates all they have done for her and respects what they hope to accomplish, but begs them to turn around.

Flint and Miranda do not turn back, and instead take Abigail ashore. Before she departs, she gives Billy her journal. They are met by Colonel William Rhett, commander of the Charles Town Militia. Rhett asks Flint if he wants an audience with Lord Ashe, and Flint says he does. Rhett then leads them into town, and explains how Lord Ashe began combatting the pirate problem, and that he helped the town realize that once you stop fearing something, they lose all their power. Rhett's men then grab Miranda and begin beating Flint, despite Miranda's protests that they are old friends of the Governor. Rhett says that Lord Ashe gave very specific instructions that if they were to get their hands on Captain Vane, he was never to leave the city. Rhett says that he has no reason to believe those same instructions don't apply to Flint. Abigail then orders them to stop, for they are telling the truth, even saying that she remembers Flint as an old friend of her father's. She threatens that if they lay another hand on Flint, she will ascertain he knows who did. Rhett then escorts the three of them to the Governor's Mansion, where she is reunited with her father[7].

Flint, Miranda and Peter continue to discuss reconciliation. At some point, Abigail interrupts them to say that Mrs. Tyler says it's time to turn the room over for dinner. Her father then asks her to ask Mrs. Tyler to find a room for Flint and Miranda. While Flint, Miranda, and the Ashes are having dinner, Peter orders Rhett, Abigail and everyone else to clear the room.  Ashe states that he has given it much thought and the only way for Flint's plan to work is that they both return to London together where Flint will confess his crimes and ask forgiveness from Parliament. He states that Flint must tell the whole truth including the relationship with Thomas Hamilton. Ashe believes that this will work because Parliament will see that the most feared pirate in the New World is not a monster, but a very flawed man. Flint agrees.

Just then, Miranda realizes why the clock is so familiar to her: it belonged to Thomas and was in their home in London. Ashe admits that it was a gift from Alfred Hamilton. It is then revealed that Ashe was the reason behind all of their misfortune. Miranda realizes that James McGraw was well liked and had a good reputation among the Navy and that there must have been another reason why everyone believed the affair between him and Hamilton was true. She stands to confront Ashe with the accusations and states that he sold them out to become governor of the Carolina colony. Ashe says that he was forced to betray them because Lord Hamilton was threatening his family. Miranda becomes increasingly aggravated and says she would like Ashe to take responsibility for ruining her life and that he should be swinging from the end of a rope. Suddenly, she is shot through the head and killed by Colonel Rhett. Flint then attacks Rhett but is subdued and knocked out by Ashe's men as Abigail screams[8].

The morning of Flint's trial, Ashe finds Abigail solemnly hitting a single key on her harpsichord. He informs her that he has arranged for her to be transported to Savannah and stay with Mr. Ashford, a friend of his. Abigail asks him why he wants her to leave, and Peter responds by saying that these trials arouse a great deal of passion that while natural, is not something he is comfortable exposing her to. Abigail scathingly asks if it is for her welfare or his own that he is sending her away. She says that he raised her to respect the truth as the root of all virtue, and asks him point blank if he is afraid that if someone asks her what happened the previous night at dinner, she will tell the truth. Peter tries to placate her, but Abigail asks why he isn't upset that of the two people who rescued and cared for her, one is dead and the other is about to be, while the only person who actually committed any crimes, Colonel Rhett, still works for him. Abigail then presumably leaves for Savannah. Abigail's journal becomes an important piece of evidence in Flint's trial after Charles Vane arrives with it, having been given to him by Billy[9].
