History[]
Background[]
Season One[]
Mr. Scott, a former slave and now right hand man to Eleanor Guthrie, the chief fence of Nassau, grew up in Africa before being kidnapped and sold. He bears tribal scars on his face that indicate he is a member of the Yoruba people. Nassau in general, is home to many freed slaves, although the interior estates on New Providence still have up to hundreds of African slaves.
Max is a half African, half French woman working as a prostitute at the Inn in Nassau.
Mosiah is an influential member of the Walrus crew, leading a group of eight (nine including him) African crew members. Mosiah and his bodyguard Levi are killed by Charles Vane and Anne Bonny as part of a scheme to depose Captain Flint.
The Andromache sails by Harbour Island with 38 African slaves in her hold, some of whom speak West African Pidgin. However, Captain Dyfed Bryson notices the presence of the Royal Navy warship, the Scarborough, docked there, and elects to go to Nassau. Later, during the Boarding of the Andromache, Mr. Scott leads the remaining slaves (two were killed earlier) in helping the pirates finish of Bryson and his remaining men.
After negotiations with Eleanor, she and the Walrus crew reach a deal to free the Andromache slaves. The able-bodied men are freed and put on the crew of the Black Hind (where they will earn a wage), in exchange for future credits and subsidies for the Walrus crew. She is then able to scrounge up enough money to purchase the freedom of the six remaining women, who she then employs in her Tavern.
Season Two[]
Just prior to the Assault on Fort Nassau, Mr. Scott and Flint discuss the dangers of the attack. Scott tells him that he had never seen a structure like the fort before he arrived in Nassau, and that it had seemed indestructible.
In a flashback to 1705, Lady Miranda Hamilton invites Lieutenant James McGraw to view a collection of Ancient Egyptian artifacts at the home of Jonathan and Margaret Grey, the Duke and Duchess of Surrey.
John Silver claims to have been a crew member on a ship that ran African slaves in and out of Charles Town.
During the Sack of Charles Town, Flint fights a member of the Charles Town Militia and pushes him against a slave pen. The slaves then hold the man down while Flint stabs him. Flint then cuts the lock off the cage in gratitude, as well as to distract the members of the militia pursuing him.
Season Three[]
Jack Rackham sends Charles Vane to capture a Dutch ship carrying timber and other supplies necessary for fort repairs. However, the ship actually carries a cargo of African slaves. Vane is outraged when he discovers this after the battle, but agrees to it after Jack assures him that they will be treated fairly.

After escaping the Doldrums, Flint and his crew land on an uncharted island, where they are then captured by a large group of Maroons, escaped slaves, and taken to their camp inland. Dooley asks Flint if the fact that they have freed a lot of slaves will put them in good stead with their captors. Billy Bones points out that they've sold more than they've freed, and even if they hadn't the Maroons would assume it.
After Woodes Rogers successfully takes over Nassau, the slaves escape, Benjamin Hornigold says that the pen was left unlocked. Mr. Scott is later revealed to be the leader of the Maroons that captured Flint and his men, and tries to help the fort slaves escape, but he is shot and wounded by Redcoats who happened upon the scene. The slaves bring him to the Camp, where he reunites with his wife and daughter, the Maroon Queen and Madi. Flint is then able to negotiate a partnership with them where they try to retake Nassau from the governor, and ignite a slave rebellion across the New World.
The Maroons try and heal Mr. Scott with traditional herbal remedies administered by Fremah and healing ceremonies led by the Medicine Man. Later, Madi goes with the Walrus crew to Nassau. While Silver proclaims Flint's return, Madi goes to Eme, who agrees to help retrieve a weapons stockpile that Scott had maintained.
