Barbados is an island in the West Indies and a colony of the British Empire. The capital and largest city is Bridgetown and its primary export is sugar.
Geography[]
The island is located in the Atlantic Ocean, east of the other West Indies islands. Barbados is the eastermost island in the Lesser Antilles. It is relatively flat in comparison to neighboring islands. The island rises gently into a central highland region. The capital and largest city is Bridgetown, but the island is home to several other settlements as well.
People[]
Most of the inhabitants of Barbados are wealthy planters who grow sugarcane. Due to the labor-intensive nature of sugar cultivation, there is a large population of African slaves on the island. There may be Maroons on the island.
History[]
Background[]
The first settlers of Barbados arrived in 1625. Between 1640 and 1660, the West Indies attracted over two thirds of the total number of English emigrants to the Americas.
Sugarcane cultivation in Barbados began in the 1640s, after its introduction n 1637. At first, rum was produced but by 1642, sugar was the focus of the industry. As it developed into the main commercial enterprise, Barbdos was divided into large plantation estates which replaced the small holdings of the early English settlers as the wealthy planters pushed out the poorer. To work these plantations, Africans were imported as slaves in such numbers that there were three for every one planter.
By 1660, Barbados generated more trade than all the other English colonies combined. This remained so until it was eventually surpassed by geographically larger islands like Jamaica in 1713.
Season Three[]
Captain Flint declares that any magistrate in the New World who hangs men for piracy will answer to him. The magistrate in Bridgetown pays no heed to this and hangs men for piracy. Flint proceeds to sack Bridgetown.
Season Four[]
The newly minted pirate-Maroon alliance discusses attacking St. Ann's Bay as a first strike. The New England Pirate Captain says that if St. Ann's is taken, they'll starve Bridgetown. The Jamaican Maroon Chief adds that the rest of Barbados has fallen to a slave rebellion. Flint asks another Maroon Chief how many men he could recruit with Bridgetown as a staging ground. The Chief believes he could muster seven or eight hundred men. Flint says that if they could recruit one slave in three from Barbados, they'd have 1,200 men they could land anywhere they choose with ships to support the landing.
Quotes[]
"...And Barbados has just fallen."- the Jamaican Maroon Chief in XXXV.
"If we could recruit one slave in three in Barbados, that's twelve hundred men we could land anywhere we chose, with ships to support the landing."- Flint to the Maroon and pirate leaders in XXXV.
