The Bermuda Islands is a group of approximately 181 islands in the Atlantic Ocean east of North America. Bermuda is a colony of the British Empire, and the governor is Captain Benjamin Bennett.
Geography[]
The group of 181 islands is centered around the Main Island, where the capital city of Hamilton is located. The islands are roughly 640 miles south-southwest of the British colony of Carolina, on the North American mainland.
People[]
The people of Bermuda are largely farmers. The islands are also home to roughly 3500 African slaves, almost half the population of the islands.
History[]
Background[]
The island was first discovered in 1511 by Spanish explorers. English settlement on the island began in 1609 after a ship loaded with colonists and supplies bound for Roanoke was shipwrecked. The first official settlement was in 1612, when the first governor, Richard Moore, was sent there with 60 settlers, and they built the original capital of St. George.
The colony blossomed over the years, owing much of its success to the growing of tobacco and sugarcane as well as participation in the salt trade. Corn and potatoes are also grown on the island.
Season Three[]
King George I signs an act granting aRoyal Pardon to the pirates of Nassau after being convinced by the newly appointed Royal Governor of New Providence Island, Woodes Rogers, who was instructed to deliver and grant the pardon to any pirate who surrendered.
Governor Benjamin Bennett printed certificates of the pardon to be granted to the pirates and acted as a notary for them. Woodes Rogers gave these pardon certificates to the pirates who surrendered.
