The Boarding of the Spanish Man O' War took place almost immediately after the Battle in Division Bay. The surviving pirates from the Walrus, led by the deposed Captain Flint and acting captain Dufresne, assaulted the skeleton crew on the Spanish Man O' War as the sun was setting, and was able to capture the ship and escape, making a course for Nassau to acquire reinforcements with the goal of returning and capturing the Urca de Lima gold.
History[]
Prelude[]
The crew of the Walrus had just suffered a devestating defeat at the hands of the of the Spanish Man O' War in their quest for the Urca de Lima gold. During the battle, Captain Flint's numerous crimes were revealed to the crew, and he had been deposed as captain. He, along with accomplice John Silver, were given a death sentence by the surviving 32 men, led by Dufresne.
Flint and Silver were taken to the site of the Urca wreck, which had occurred the previous night after a hurricane. The Spanish had set up camp and worked on recovering the gold, while the Man O' War was anchored nearby to stave off any attacks from the sea. Flint was told his sentence would be commuted if he made a plan that would allow the pirates to capture the gold. After sullenly refusing at first, Flint eyed the Man O' War and agreed.
Flint then relayed his plan to the crew. Noting the large amount of soldiers on the beach, he concludes that the ship is left with a skeleton crew. He proposes that while the sun is setting, but before the night watch arrives, two men swim out and eliminate the mainmast watch and signal the rest of the men to board. Flint volunteers in exchange for their pardon, and asks for one more man. After no one else volunteers, Silver steps forward.
Dufresne leaves Flint and Silver on a beach near the Man O' War. Silver then reveals that he thought Flint was just spinning a tale so they could escape. He begins to leave, pledging to find a living in St. Augustine. However, he joins Flint after he reveals that the city is at least a week away on foot, with Tequesta tribes in the area.
The Boarding[]
The two swim to the ship and climbed through an open gunport into the main sleeping quarters of the Spanish crew. Silver notices something and tries to grab it, but in the process wakes up a Sleeping Spanish Sailor, whom Flint quickly kills. When an angry Flint confronts Silver about almost getting them killed over "a bauble," Silver explains that it is a boatswain's whistle, which would allow them to call the lookout down instead of going up to get him.
Another Spanish Sailor then comes belowdecks, and Flint kills him so Silver can steal his uniform. The two then go to the main deck, where Silver uses the whistle to call down the Lookout down. Silver then climbs up to the crow's nest, while Flint kills the Lookout. However, the two are then captured by the Spanish sailors.
Flint and Silver are taken below and tied to chairs. The Spanish Boatswain tells them that he could torture both of them to find out their goals and numbers. However, he wants to resolve the matter before his commander arrives. He offers gold and freedom to the first man who tells him what he wants to know. Silver immediately tells them that they had originally come for the gold but were now trying to take the ship and that the rest of their 32 crewmates were waiting nearby in longboats.
Silver is cut free and collects his reward. As the Boatswain prepares to shoot Flint, Silver comes up behind him and smashes a lantern into his head, killing him. He then aims at the two remaining sailors. Flint suggests killing the Scarred Spanish Sailor, whose scars indicate that he has been in more fights. Silver is worried that the other Spanish Sailor will reach the other pistol, but Flint assures him that he can beat the sailor to it. Silver follows Flint's orders and shoots the Scarred sailor. He then grapples with the second man, but Flint breaks free and kills him. The two then barricade themselves in the cabin.
Outside, the Ranking Spanish Sailor hears the gunshots and finding the door locked, orders his men to ram it down. Inside, Silver and Flint crouch behind a table and prepare for a last stand with the three pistols, cutlass and dagger at their disposal. However, the rest of the Walrus crew arrives and boards the ship. The Spanish are quickly overwhelmed and the pirates sail away with the warship, taking a few hits from the batteries on the shore but suffering no significant damage.
Aftermath[]
After the pirates take the ship, they vote 17-15 in favor of commuting Flint's and Silver's death sentences. Dufresne informs them of this, but reminds them that they will be expelled from the crew upon their arrival in Nassau. As they sail back to Nassau to replenish their force, Flint reveals to Silver that he plans on regaining the captaincy. He is successful when Dufresne botches the Boarding of the English Merchant Ship.
