Castillo San Salvador de la Punta is a fortress guarding the western side of the entrance to Havana bay in Havana, Cuba.

History[]

Background[]

The fort, like Morro Castle, was designed by Italian engineer Battista Antonelli, who was brought to Cuba after repeated corsair landings had endangered the harbor and the city of Havana. Construction began in 1590 and moved slowly. In 1595, a hurricane severely damaged the fortress. The engineer decided to make the fortress into a keep holding 10-12 artillery pieces. As the years went on, it was taken apart, leaving three bastions. In 1630, a boom chain was lain between San Salvador and Castle Morro, giving them the ability too close the harbor if need be.

Season Four[]

Woodes Rogers sails his ship, the Revenge, past the fortress in order to enter Havana’s harbor. Rogers’ first mate, Molin, nervously looks at the fortress and remarks that if the Spanish  fire on them, they will be sunk before they can get their gunports open. Rogers assures him that they won’t be fired upon. Molin points out that England and Spain are at war. Rogers counters by pointing out that the most recognizable British governor in the New World is attempting to sail a man o’ war and requesting parlay into the port of Havana. Rogers asks Molin that if he were them, wouldn’t he want to know why.

Quotes[]

"If they fire on us... we'll be sunk before we get our gunports open."- Molin to Woodes Rogers in XXXIII.
