History[]

Background[]

Ships would often keep cats as pets to keep the rat population in check.

Randall, the cook aboard the Walrus, kept a pet cat named Betsy

Richard Guthrie used to feed a stray black tomcat that would mew outside his door. His father used to beat him for his kindness, believing it to be weakness.

Season One[]

John Silver is brought on to the crew of the Walrus as the new cook, and is introduced to Randall and Betsy.

During the careening of the Walrus, Betsy is caught near the collapsing ship, and Randall goes after her. Betsy is able to run away, but Randall's leg is pinned and amputated to save him.

Season Four[]

Marion Guthrie tells Jack Rackham and Max the story of Richard and the tomcat. When Richard was young, there was a tomcat that lived in the woods behind their house. The cat would scratch at the windows all night, and Richard would go out to feed it. Joseph, believing Richard's kindness to be a weakness, and would flog him and kick the cat. However, every night, the cat would return, Richard would feed it, and Joseph would beat them. They were all incapable of changing. The cat was a slave to its hunger, Richard to his decency and Joseph to his rage.

Marion compares this to the endless cycle of violence and failure that has plagued Nassau, and asks the two how they will solve this issue. Max says that at a certain point someone has to say enough and drown the cat. Marion is amused by this answer, but asks her what she'll do if the cat fights back.
