Biography[]
Background[]
Hedges was born around 1650. After being educated at Oxford, he served as a judge on an Admiralty Court. He served two terms as the Secretary of State for the Northern Department before being appointed as Secretary of State for the Southern Department. The Northern Secretary was responsible for Northern England, Scotland, and relations with the Protestant countries in Europe. The Southern Secretary, the more senior position, was responsible for Southern England, Wales, Ireland, the New World colonies, and the Catholic and Muslim states of Europe.
Hedges died in 1714.
Season Two[]
In a flashback to 1705, Lord Thomas Hamilton and Lieutenant James McGraw propose to the former's father, Lord Proprietor Alfred Hamilton, that they offer the pirates of Nassau a Royal Pardon in order to convince them to rejoin the fold of the British Empire. Alfred refuses, and leaves after arguing with his son and the lieutenant. Thomas warns James that his father is going to oppose him in any way he can, and is likely going to try and secure the aid of the Sea Lords, the Privy Council and Sir Charles, the Southern Secretary.
Quotes[]
"Right now he will be dispatching messages to the Sea Lords, the Southern Secretary, his friends in the Privy Council. He will stop at nothing to ensure that this plan never sees the light of day."
