History[]

Season Three[]

Charles Vane used this ship to chase after a Dutch vessel that was carrying supplies such as lumber which would be necessary for the restoration of the fort. However, while chasing the ship, it is revealed she's carrying slaves. The captain of the vessel attempted to avoid being boarded by tossing the slaves into the sea, but Vane left the longboats behind and boarded the Dutch ship. As punishment for being a slaver and throwing the slaves overboard, Vane has the Dutch captain tied to  a cannon barrel and thrown in the sea to drown[1].

After Woodes Rogers takes over Nassau, all that remains of the pirate resistance is the fleet stationed in the bay. Rogers' fleet is blocking their escape from the bay, so Edward Teach decides to use a fireship. Under the cover of night, Vane is able to sails the ship, which has been loaded with incendiary materials close to Rogers' fleet under a white flag. Despite the protests of Commodore Chamberlin , Rogers orders his ship to cut their anchor cables to avoid the schooner. Vane then whistles, signaling the skeleton crew of the ship to evacuate into the longboat while he steers it towards the British fleet. He then ignites the material belowdecks, turning the schooner into a fireship.

Vane and his crew are able to make it to Blackbeard's ship while Rogers' fleet disperses. From his flagship, Rogers orders his gun crews to stop firing on the schooner's rigging and aim for her waterline to sink her. However, the order comes too late and the schooner collides with the Willing Mind, severely damaging if not sinking her. The collision also sends flaming debris flying on to the deck of Rogers' flagship, the Delicia[2]

Trivia[]

  • On art director Ross Jenkin's website, he calls the ship the Ranger, but the drafts list it simply as "Vane's ship" or "Vane's schooner."
  • In real life, Charles Vane famously used a fireship to escape the British blockade after the bulk of the pirates had surrendered. However, there are two notable differences from the show's depiction of events. The first is that the fireship was actually a 250 ton, 20 gun French vessel that Vane had recently captured. The second major difference is that Rogers' fleet escaped harm in real life.
