Christopher Columbus was an Italian explorer who completed four voyages across the Atlantic Ocean that opened the New World for conquest and permanent European colonization of the Americas. His voyages were sponsored by the Spanish Empire.
History[]
Background[]
Columbus was believed to have been born in the October of 1451 in Genoa. His father was a wool weaver who also owned a cheese stand. He went to sea at a young age and travelled widely.
In 1492, Columbus secured funding for his voyages from the Catholic monarchs of Spain. The first place he landed was he is thought to have been San Salvador or possibly Samana Cay, both in the Bahamas. The Spaniards made no attempt to settle but operated slave raids on the peaceful Arawak that depopulated the islands. He also explored Cuba and the northwest coast of Hispaniola.
In 1493, he discovered Saint Kitts. He also charted the island of Martinique, but did not land on it.
On May 5, 1494, Columus landed on Jamaica. The Spanish Crown granted the island to Columbus’ family, but for decades it remained a backwater, valued chiefly as a supply base for food and animal hides.
Columbus died in 1506, after prolonged legal battles with the Spanish Crown and colonial governors in the New World. His final resting place was in the cathedral in Seville.
Season Two[]
In a flashback to 1705, Lieutenant James McGraw tells Lady Miranda Hamilton that if people in his world did what they pleased with no regard for convention, Columbus would still be sailing in circles off the coast of Spain.
Quotes[]
"Lady Hamilton, do you know what would happen in my world if people just did as they please with no regard for convention? Columbus would still be sailing in circles off the coast of Spain." - James McGraw to Miranda Hamilton in XI.
