Constance was the fourth wife of Edward Teach

Biography[]

Background[]

After retiring from piracy, Edward Teach took a number of wives to try and produce a son. Constance was his fourth wife, whom he describes as sweet but that she was superstitious. She thought crickets in the house were good luck, but a moth was bad. She was most superstitious about the bed. No hats were allowed on it, no brooms near it, nor any clothes that were worn outdoors allowed in it. Any violation of these rules brought great misfortune. Eventually, Teach divorced her after their union failed to produce any children.

Season Three[]

After departing Nassau, which has fallen to the new Royal Governor, Woodes Rogers, Teach tellsCharles Vane about Constance and her superstitions. Vane is confused by the speech, but Teach explains that a woman has the God-given power to leave marks on a man. For example, even though Teach and Constance have been separated for six years, he still moves a broom whenever he sees it near a bed.

Quotes[]

"My fourth wife, Constance... a sweet girl, bright, but she had her notions. Cricket in the house means good luck, a moth in the house, bad. And the bed... Jesus, the bed. No hats on it, no brooms near it, nor any clothes in it that were worn outdoors. Any violation of this brought great misfortune. I mean, for an otherwise sane woman, she had these pockets of complete and thorough madness within her. Although it's been six years since I've seen her face... to this day, if I... if I see a broom by a bed, I... I have to move it."Edward Teach to Charles Vane  in XXIII.
