Biography[]

Season Three[]

The Official joins Rogers in his endeavor to civilize Nassau. At the execution of Charles Vane, the Official speaks to assembled crowd while they jeer at Vane. He says that when Governor Rogers arrived, he promised the people of Nassau order and prosperity.

He goes on to talk about men who he says are truly beasts, governed by base instinct and incapable anything but the most primal behaviors. He says these men are a constant threat to all the decent and God fearing people. The Court Official says that as long as men like Vane are free, strife will continue, fear will abound and progress will be unreachable. He says that today marks the silencing of the most disruptive of those voices and step towards the return of civilization in Nassau. However, he adds that they must remember however strong the need for the removal of traitors and savages like Vane is, there is no relish in the movement, but there is righteousness and comfort in the knowledge that justice is being done. He finishes by saying that God’s will will be done in Nassau again. He then asks Vane if he has anything to say before the sentence is carried out.

Vane responds by saying the men who brought him here today do not fear him, but fear the people of Nassau. They fear them because they know that Vane’s voice, one that refuses to be enslaved, once lived in the citizens of Nassau and may still. They want to show the people death and use it to frighten them into ignoring that voice inside them. Vane tells the people to remember that they are many, and the British are few, to fear death is a choice and that Rogers can’t hang them all. Vane then tells the executioner to get on with it. While Vane hangs, Jacob Garrett, Russell and Davis hold his body down until his neck breaks, granting him a quicker death.

Quotes[]

"When our lord governor arrived here, he promised you things. Order. Prosperity…" - The Court Official begins his speech in XXVII.

“Men who are not men at all, but beasts governed by the base instinct, incapable of anything but the most primal behaviors. A constant threat to every decent, God-fearing citizen among us. As long as those men roam free, strife will endure, fear will abound, and progress will elude us. Today marks the silencing of the most disruptive of those voices and a step towards the return of civilization in Nassau. But we must always remember however strong the need for the removal of these traitors, these relics of a more savage age, there is no relish in this moment, but there is righteousness and comfort in the knowledge that…”- The rest of the Court Official's speech.
