Flint's dagger

Flint's dagger.

Daggers and Knives are weapons that can also be used as tools. In combat, they would be used for cutting or stabbing. Bayonets, a type of knife, are blades affixed to muskets to turn the musket into a sort of spear for hand to hand combat.

Almost every pirate carries a knife or a dagger as a sidearm. British Regulars uniformly carry plug bayonets.

Charles Vane's pirate flag depicts a red dagger, sideways facing skull and heart.

Types of Knives & Daggers[]

  • Dagger: A dagger is a weapon used for cutting or stabbing composed of a blade fixed into a handle. What differentiates it from a knife is that daggers always are symmetrical, with both sharp edges of the blade ending in a sharp point.
  • Knife: a knife is an instrument composed of a blade fixed into a handle, used as a tool or as a weapon.
  • Tanto: A tanto is one of the traditionally made Japanese swords worn by the samurai of feudal Japan. It is a knife with either a single or double edged blade with a length between 15 and 30 centimeters. It is primarily a stabbing weapon, but the edge can be used for slashing as well.
  • Rondel Dagger: a rondel dagger gets its name from its circular guard. It has a long slim, triangular blade.
  • Dirk: a dirk is a type of long thrusting dagger.
  • Cleaver: a cleaver is a large knife that varies in its shape but usually resembles a rectangular-bladed hatchet. It is largely used as a kitchen or butcher knife intended for hacking through bone.
  • Plug Bayonet: The Plug Bayonet is essentially a dagger with a specially fitted handle that allows it to be inserted into the barrel of a musket for use in close quarters combat. This naturally prevents the musket from being fired, so it is only meant to be affixed after the musket has been fired. It is carried by all British Regulars.
  • Marling Spike: A Marling Spike is a tool used in marine rope work. It is shaped in the form of a metal cone tapered to a rounded or flattened point. It is used for unlaying rope for splicing and untying knots.  Most are 6-12 inches long, but some can reach 2 feet. They are usually made of steel or iron. They can be used as an improvised weapon.
