History[]

Season Three[]

After emerging from the tempest alive, the Walrus is stranded in the Doldrums with limited food and water supplies, weeks away from any coastline. The Walrus is left becalmed (unable to move through lack of wind)[1].

On day 12, the food stores have been empty for three days, and the fresh water is just about gone. Furthermore, the eel nets can't catch enough food for the crew. Flint suggests feeding only the men vital to sailing the ship. Silver is outraged by this idea, but Flint pulls rank.

On day 18, two members of the crew, Palmer and Oates, accuse each other of stealing bread and neither is willing to confess. While John Silver tries to figure out what to do with them, Flint executes the two, telling Silver that if he isn't willing to do what is necessary, he will.

On day 21, the crew finds a dead whale floating nearby. De Groot points out that they float when they rot, but Flint and Silver go out to investigate in a launch. While the whale is inedible, they harpoon several sharks to feed the crew. Shortly afterwards, the wind picks up, and the Walrus sails to the first island they find[2].

After allying with their Maroon captors, the Walrus Crew sails to Ocracoke Island so Flint can regain control of the Pirate Fleet and lead them and the Maroons in retaking Nassau. Flint meets with Edward Teach to discuss this, and Blackbeard is amazed to hear that Flint survived a tempest, starvation in the Doldrums and the Maroons' captivity[3].

The night before the Battle of the Maroon Island, Flint and John Silver bury the Cache of Gems in the forest. As they talk, Silver says that he told Billy Bones during their ordeal in the Doldrums that he believed Flint's darkest thoughts had a way of manifesting themselves into reality. Silver explains that Flint's anger over Miranda's death became the storm that they battled, and his despair the Doldrums into which they all sank. Noticing Flint's amused face, Silver reminds the captain that he hadn't had anything to eat when he said all this[4].

Trivia[]

  • After filming for Black Sails concluded, Outlander, another Starz production, reused the prop ships and the set for Nassau Town for their episodes taking place in the West Indies in the 1760s. In one of those episodes, titled "The Doldrums," the main characters are on a ship that is becalmed.
