Dragoons are a class of mounted soldier trained for combat using swords and pistols from horseback. Their name is derived from a type of pistol called a "dragon," a handgun version of the blunderbuss.
"Dragoon" is occasionally used as a verb meaning to subjugate or persecute by the imposition fo troops, or to compel by violent measures or threats.
History[]
Background[]
Dragoons were initially mounted infantry forces, established due to the occasional need of transporting infantry speedily, beginning in the mid 16th century. They were often supplied with inferior horses and more basic equipment, making them cheaper to maintain than more expensive traditional cavalry units. Eventually, they began to be trained as conventional light or heavy cavalry.
Season Three[]
Governor Woodes Rogers departs Nassau with an escort of 8 dragoons to transport the Urca de Lima cache of gems and the prisoner, Jack Rackham, to a ship bound for Havana. Taking a route they thought secret, they are ambushed by pirates led by Captain Flint. All of the dragoons are slain and Rogers seriously wounded. The pirates escape with Rackham and the gems, but late arriving reinforcements from the New Providence Island Militia are able to capture Charles Vane, who Rogers had wounded as he tried to escape.
Season Four[]
Five dragoons and over a dozen British Regulars and militiamen with hunting dogs are sent to scour the Wrecks for Long John Silver, who they learn is hiding there. However, he evades capture with the timely arrival of Flint and his men, who kill the three Redcoats who managed to corner him. The Posse Commander leads them back to Nassau with the Black Spot note left on the bodies of the dead soldiers.
Lieutenant Utley, a dragoon, becomes Rogers' second in command, as the most senior military officer in Nassau after the death of Captain Berringer.
