The Duel at Ocracoke Island was an engagement in the Pirate-Maroon conflict during which Captain James Flint tried to regain control of the Pirate Fleet from Edward Teach in order to retake Nassau.

History[]

Background[]

After the Conquest of Nassau, Edward Teach and Charles Vane escaped with the Pirate Fleet and went to Teach's favorite haunt, Ocracoke Island. Meanwhile, Flint and his crew had been captured by Maroons, but was able to negotiate a deal with them to form a partnership. Flint promised that he would reclaim the fleet, and then they would join forces to retake Nassau and from there lead a rebellion of pirates and slaves against the British Empire.

The Parley[]

Flint and his men arrived on Ocracoke, where he explained what had happened to him to Teach. Teach refused to participate in Flint's plan, believing that Nassau is dead and they owe it nothing. Flint tries to convince Vane, believing that if he sided with him, it would draw defectors from Teach's camp. However, Vane sided with Teach. Flint and Teach then agreed to a duel, first with pistols and then swords, and that no mercy would be asked for nor given.

The Duel[]

Teach and Flint walk to opposite sides of the beach surrounded by their men on either side. At the Referee Pirate's signal, the two fire at each other. Flint's hits Teach and he goes down, seemingly killed. However, the bullet grazed his face and he rises, furious. The two then grab their swords and begin fighting. At first, they seem evenly match, with neither having the upper hand. However, between Teach's size and strength and his recent tribulations (starvation, captivity), he begins to grow exhausted. Teach continues to hammer him and is able to land a slash on the back of his right shoulder. He then knocks Flint down and disarms him. Before he can land the finishing blow, Vane intervenes and drives Teach back. Shocked at being betrayed by Vane yet again, he orders Flint to take Vane and leave the island.

Aftermath[]

While disappointed at not getting the fleet, Flint, Vane and the Maroon Queen are able to formulate a plan to rescue Jack Rackham and his cache of gems in order to bait Rogers into committing all his forces to a disadvantageous battlefield- the Maroon Island.
