The Dutch Slaver was a prize chased by Charles Vane

History[]

Background[]

Jack Rackham sends Charles Vane to capture this ship, telling him it contains a cargo of timber, which is vital to repairing the fort. In truth, the ship carries slaves, Rackham decides to use them rather than continue paying wages to pirates who won't work.

Season Three[]

Charles Vane and Featherstone give chase aboard Charles Vane's schooner. As they give orders to their crew to prepare to board, they notice men jumping overboard. Featherstone asks if it's the Dutch crew jumping overboard, but Vane realizes it's their cargo. Vane says it's funny, Jack led him to believe the slaver was carrying timber and other supplies necessary for fort repairs, but neglected to mention she was carrying slaves. Aboard the ship, the Slaver Captain tells his crew that if Vane wants his cargo, he can have it. He has them throw the slaves overboard, hoping that Vane will be forced to stop his pursuit to pick up the slaves, giving him the chance to flee. His hopes are dashed when his First Mate tells him that Vane has left longboats behind to pick up the slaves and is continuing his chase. The Slaver Captain then grimly tells his men to prepare to be boarded.

The pirates board and a fierce, but brief fight ensues. The captain retreats to his cabin and hastily loads a pistol, shaking out of fear. A bloodied Vane then barges in, the captain shakily aims and fires his pistol, but misses by a good foot. The captain then slumps forward, defeated. Vane tells the captain that while he likely knows who Vane is, he does not know of Vane's past as a slave. Had he known, he might have made different choices regarding his slaves. Vane then has the captain executed by throwing him overboard, chained to cannonballs which drag him to the ocean floor.
