An eel is any ray-finned fish belong to the order Anguilliformes, which consists of about 800 species. Most eels are predators.
The term “eel” is also used for some other eel-shaped fish, like electric eels.

While stranded in the Doldrums, Dooley operates the eel nets of the Walrus, to try and supplement their depleted food stores. By day 12, three days after the food stores are finished, Billy informs Captain Flint that the eel nets aren’t enough to feed the crew.
By day 18 in the Doldrums, Dooley continues to try and catch eels with the nets, and is able to catch several. Belowdecks, John Silver divides the meat and blood into portions to feed the crew.
