Naft is a pirate captain in command of the Intrepid. Naft is one of the least profitable captains on the island, yet owns one of the largest ships.

Biography[]

Season One[]

Naft is first seen in the streets of Nassau trying to convince the appraiser Frasier that a painting by artist Adriaen Hanneman he had looted was the genuine article and not a forgery. Despite Frasier's attempts to explain that while they are the "same" they are not on the same level. Naft points out that the two paintings both feature a woman with one breast bared holding a plan next to a bowl of fruit. Frasier fruitlessly tries to explain that there is a vast difference in quality between the two, for one is a masterpiece while the other is "an abomination." However, the two continue to argue until Frasier is summoned elsewhere[1].

Later, after Richard Guthrie shuts down his smuggling operation, he is requested by Eleanor Guthrie to attend a meeting with fellow pirate captains Benjamin Hornigold and Geoffrey Lawrence along with Frasier the appraiser, where Eleanor proposes that he and Geoffrey go legitimate and form a shipping consortium of their own. During the meeting, he tells Eleanor that he does not envisage any problems in convincing his men to become merchant sailors. Hornigold, who is there to lend legitimacy to and provide security for the operation, demands that Eleanor rescind the ban on Charles Vane, which she vehemently refuses. Hornigold gives her until dark, promising to withdraw his men from The Tavern if she refuses to agree[2].

Naft S1E6

After Hornigold makes his ultimatum, Eleanor stays alone in her office thinking on the terms. Naft states that he thinks her thinking this over is a good thing, much to the surprise of Geoffrey and Frasier. Frasier explains to him that her taking her time is her really just swallowing her pride, and if she takes to long, Hornigold will leave and they risk being killed by the mob outside. Soon after this, Eleanor comes out of her office and accepts Hornigold's terms[3].

Once Hornigold joins the consortium, Naft and Geoffrey go to their crews and explain their new jobs. Just as Naft expected, he crew was willing to take on the newer, safer job. At the first meeting of the Consortium, Geoffrey explains he had the opposite reaction, and most of his crew left when they heard the news. As Lawrence continues to describe his predicament, Eleanor leaves the meeting when O'Malley informs her that Mr. Scott is downstairs[4].

The Consortium arranges for Captain Lawrence to go on the maiden voyage. He is prepared to leave, however the departure is interrupted by the firing of Fort Nassau's guns at the Royal LionThe Consortium rushes to the safety of the Tavern. There, they discuss what has happened. All they know is that a small band of men was seen approaching the fort from the west earlier that morning. Mr. Scott asks if all the home crews are accounted for and Captain Lawrence says that they are and none had anything to do with this. Naft asks if this is a first move by England to reclaim the islan, but Frasier says there isn't a single ship involved and that this doesn't have the air of a state move. Vane then arrives and demands an audience with Eleanor. He reveals himself as the person who took over Fort Nassau, and threatens to sink every ship in the bay unless he is given Hornigold's spot on the Consortium. Eleanor agrees, much to Hornigold's displeasure. Naft is then present at Captain Lawrence's departure[5]

Season Two[]

When Captain Lawrence returns from his voyage, the Consortium meets in the parlor of the Tavern. Eleanor is disappointed to learn he got a far smaller amount of money for his goods than he should have. Eleanor says that all the documents and payoffs were in good order, but Lawrence replies that Eleanor's family's name is not. Lawrence explains that he considers it a miracle that he even made it back to Nassau. He explains that because of it, he was meant with great skepticism every step of the way. And when the customs man learned he was an agent of Eleanor's, he was questioned for nearly three hours. Lawrence convinced him that there would be reprisals against the man personally if he wasn't allowed to leave. Vane then asks by whose hand did he promise reprisals, and sarcastically asks if it was Naft's, for it is obvious that Lawrence used Vane's name to cow the customs man[6].

When Flint returns and begins planning to oust Vane from the fort by bombarding it and then invading with his men and Benjamin Hornigold's, Eleanor leads the Consortium in backing Vane. She has Frasier pay four criers to spread Vane's message to the rest of Nassau. Frasier asks why they are supporting Vane, and Eleanor says they are not supporting his position, they are merely relaying it[7]

When Eleanor is arrested by Hornigold and his men, the Consortium falls apart and Naft and Lawrence's crews scatter[8]

Trivia[]

  • The painting that Naft is trying to pass off as an original is a forgery of an artwork by Dutch painter Adriaen Hanneman (1603-1671).
