The First Mate is a position aboard merchant and in some rare cases, pirate vessels.
The first mate is a position aboard merchant ships. The first mate is the deck officer second in command to the captain of a merchant ship. The First Mate's primary responsibilities are the vessel's cargo operations, its stability, and supervising the deck crew. The mate is responsible for the safety and security of the ship, as well as the welfare of the crew on board. The Boatswain carries out the First Mate's orders, and thusly directs the ordinary and able seamen.
Aboard pirate ships, the equivalent position is quartermaster, but pirate quartermasters have more authority and like the captain, are elected by the crew.
