Jefferson explains that they are merely tools of the trade; the pirates profit from plunder, not bloodshed. The pirates profit most when the plunder is least costly to win. The stories Fogg has heard are supplied by the pirates themselves to induce surrender. Jefferson believes that if they behave rationally and civilly, so will the pirates.

When Captain Edward Low and his crew board, Jefferson hands him the ship's manifest. As his crew is going through the cargo, Low's quartermaster, Meeks, notices something unique about the manifest. Low tells him he knows what to do. Meeks calls his crew up, and the pirates point their weapons at the merchant crew in the well deck. Fogg gazes helplessly at his captain, who futilely pleads for the pirates to spare his crew. Low ignores Jefferson and his men slaughter Fogg and his men. Jefferson is personally killed by Low. The pirates then abduct Abigail Ashe to hold her for ransom and burn the Good Fortune.
