France is a country in Western Europe and the heart of the French Empire. The capital city of France and of the empire is Paris.
History[]
Background[]
France, originally known as Gaul, was a part of the Roman Empire before its fall. Afterwards, the Frankish king Clovis united most of Gaul under his rule, and the medieval kingdom of France emerged from the province of West Francia. They achieved prominence under the rule of the House of Capet, which was founded in 987.
A succession crisis in 1328 after the death of the last Capet monarch led to the Hundred Years War, where the King of England claimed the throne of France. By the 1450s, the English had lost all their territory in France, but still included "King of France" as one of their titles.
Recent History[]
After the death of Charles II of Spain, he named his successor, Philip, a member of the French Royal House of Bourbon, as his successor. This led to the outbreak of the War of the Spanish Succession, with the British Empire, the Dutch Republic and the Holy Roman Empire challenging the succession out of fear that the Spanish and French Empires would unite.
In 1705, after being ordered to leave England, Lord Peter Ashe offered to set up Lieutenant James McGraw and Lady Miranda Hamilton with his friends in Paris, but the two went to Nassau instead.
Season One[]
Benjamin Hornigold mentions that he heard that James Stuart fled to France and is now called “the Pretender.”
Under Jack Rackham’s ownership, and with Max’s help, the Inn hosts a special event with the theme being “Evenings in Paris.”
Season Three[]
After fleeing Woodes Rogers and his forces, Anne Bonny suggests to Jack Rackham that they flee to Paris, but acknowledges that she doesn’t speak French.
On the Royal Pardon certificates that the pirates receive, the King of France is listed as a title of King George I of England.
Season Four[]
France, along with the British Empire, the Dutch Republic and the Holy Roman Empire, declare war on the Spanish Empire in the War of the Quadruple Alliance.
Quotes[]
