Sir Francis Drake was an English sea captain, privateer, slave trader, naval officer and explorer durignt the reign of Queen Elizabeth. 

Biography[]

Background[]

Drake was born in 1540 in England. After spending much of his early years at sea, he completed the second circumnavigation of the world in a single voyage, from 1577 to 1580. During the voyagae, he captured many Spanish treasure ships, leading Spain to label him a pirate. 

He was awarded a knighthood in 1581, and became the Mayor of Plymouth. He later became a member of Parliament for the city. 

As a Vice Admiral of the Englishl Navy, he was the second-in-command of the English fleet in the victorious battle against the Spanish Armada in 1588. 

Drake died at the age of 56 in 1596 of dysentery after unsuccessful attacks against Panama City

Pirate Captain Benjamin Hornigold once captured a prize near Boston, and on board was a chair that once sat in Drake's office in Plymouth. The chair became Hornigold's "throne" from which he surveyed Nassau and its harbor from Fort Nassau

When Gates visits Hornigold in the fort, he complains that Hornigold made him climb all those stairs just to see Hornigold sitting in his chair. Hornigold responds by asking his man Phillip if he knows how he got his chair. Hornigold then explains its history of belonging to Sir Francis Drake.
