The colony was founded using people extracted from debtor’s prisons to be used as settlers. Slavery was forbidden and they attempted to maintain good relationships with the natives.

History[]

Background[]

Governor James Oglethorpe founded the colony using convicts from debtors' prisons, hoping to give them a second chance. When he arrived in the New World, he negotiated with the chief of the local Yamacraw people to give him land so he could build Savannah, and he continued to try ensure that the colonists and natives were on good terms.

The colony also served as a garrison or buffer zone between the British colonies and Spanish Florida. Due to the high emphasis on military matters, slavery was forbidden by the colony's charter, as it was viewed as a potential liability in times of conflict.

Season Two[]

Colonel William Rhett tells Captain Flint and Miranda Barlow that before Governor Peter Ashe committed to fighting piracy, raiders would assault Carolina’s shipping as far north as Mount Pleasant, and as far south as the Cumberland Sound in Georgia.

Before Flint’s trial begins, Ashe sends his daughter Abigail to stay with Mr. Ashford, a friend of his, in Savannah, hoping to spare her the sight of the trial’s ugliness.

Season Four[]

Max tells John Silver about a reform minded man with an estate north of Spanish Florida. He uses convicts as laborers and interns them humanely. Max mentions that prominent families in London made use of it to get rid of troublesome family members. Silver tries to ask her which families in London made use of it.

Silver sends Tom Morgan to investigate the estate and see if Thomas Hamilton is held there. After Woodes Rogers is defeated at the Battle at Skeleton Island he has Morgan, Israel Hands and Ben Gunn bring Flint to the estate, to prevent him from continuing to wage his war against the British Empire. There, he is reunited with Thomas Hamilton.
