The Slave is charged with watching over Richard Guthrie while he stays and convalesces at the Barlow Estate, armed with a pistol.
When the Slave falls asleep, Richard sneaks out of his room and looks through Miranda's belongings while she is outside with Pastor Lambrick. Before she comes back inside, he sneaks back to his room.
