The Gunner is an officer's rank on Royal Navy, merchant and pirate vessels.
The officer's rank of Gunner was one responsible for all the cannons aboard the ship, as well as their maintenance and upkeep. He was also in charge of the powder magazine. Gunners had oversight over all the gun captains and gun crews.
Every shipboard cannon was operated by gun crews of 5 men, including their leader, the gun captain. In battle, the gun crews would reload and position the cannon, while the gun-captain would adjust their aim appropriately and fire the cannon..
Muldoon was the Gunner of the Walrus, and would often lead his own gun crew in battle aboard the ship and later aboard the Spanish Man O' War. He also had general explosives expertise, providing a specially made smoke grenade during the Boarding of the Andromache.
A Gunner's Mate is a junior petty officer aboard Royal Navy warships and merchantmen. Their job was to assist the Gunner with the maintenance and upkeep of the great guns.
The phrase two six heave is often used by gun crews to coordinate the pulling of a cannon back into firing position after reloading.
