Henry Avery’s Journals are the journals and logs written by Henry Avery, detailing his pirating exploits. Gates came into possession of them and they are his most prized possession. He keeps them in the cellar of Miranda Barlow’s house.
History[]
Background[]
Henry Avery wrote about Skeleton Island and how to travel there in the journal and log. Avery says that he and his crew found the wreck of a Spanish ship after trying to capture one at the island. However, the captain’s log in the wreck dated the ship as having set sail from Havana in 1636. Avery says that the log said that the men refused to forage for food or water because they said when they first tried, they heard something that sounded like the voice of God, warning them to stay away. All 31 men then locked themselves in the hold and ate each other.
At some point, Hal Gates, a pirate who crewed under Avery in his youth, came into possession of them. As his most prized possession, he entrusted them to Flint, who kept them in the cellar at the Barlow Estate.
Season Four[]
Billy Bones has Woodes Rogers retrieve them from Mrs. Barlow’s cellar. After some searching, Rogers finds them and returns to the Governor’s Mansion. There, he pulls a pistol on Billy and fires at him, but it is revealed to be unloaded. Rogers wanted to show Billy that their fates are linked. Billy then scans through the journal and finds the map to Skeleton Island, saying that it is a place where he can go through with the deal exchanging Madi for the cache of gems and no one will know.
Billy laments how Flint and Gates were so close that the latter entrusted the former with his most prized possession, but all it took was a disagreement over some money for Flint to kill him.
Rogers sails the Eurydice behind the Walrus during the night. The next morning, he executes the men sent to rescue Madi. After seeing proof that they have the cache, Rogers sails the Eurydice to Skeleton Island using the journal.
En route, Flint explains the story behind Skeleton Island to Dooley, likely having been told by Gates or having read the journals himself.
Quotes[]
"That's how close Mr. Gates was to Flint. Stored his most prized possessions in his cellar. Avery's journals. Despite that measure of trust, all it took was a disagreement over a little money for Flint to kill him."
