Henry Jennings was a notorious pirate captain and one of the founders of the Pirate Republic in Nassau

Biography[]

Background[]

Little is known of Jennings’ early life, some describe him as “an educated ship captain with a  comfortable estate” in Bermuda and Jamaica. He is first recorded as a privateer during the War of the Spanish Succession, operating out of Jamaica. After the war, Jennings turned pirate and helped found the Pirate Republic of Nassau.

Season Three[]

Jack Rackham refers to Henry Jennings in the same vein as Benjamin Hornigold and Sam Bellamy as giving Nassau life when asked by Edward Teach why he is so determined to defend Nassau. Teach replies that he understands Rackham wants his name to be listed along theirs in history.

Season Four[]

While a captive of Israel Hands, John Silver recounts his story and says that while Edward Teach and Henry Jennings and the other giants were considered the fathers of the Pirate Republic, Hands was the one who actually created it by killing Governor Thompson’s wife and son.

Quotes[]

"Why are you so determined to defend Nassau?"

"Because Henry Avery set his camp here and said, 'this is a place for free men.' And you sailed from here and made this place feared. Because Henry Jennings and Benjamin Hornigold and Sam Bellamy gave Nassau life."

Edward Teach and Jack Rackham in XX.

"...so while Teach and Jennings and the giants were hailed as the fathers of the Pirate Republic, it was actually another who cut the cord." John Silver to Israel Hands in XXX.

Trivia[]

  • In real life, Henry Jennings was the pirate who salvaged the cargo of the 1715 Treasure Fleet, which included the Urca de Lima. The fleet was wrecked on the shores of Florida after a hurricane. He later took Woodes Rogers’ pardon, and retired as a wealthy plantation owner in Bermuda.
