Henry Purcell was an English composer known for his uniquely English form of Baroque music.
Biography[]
Background[]
Purcell was born in London in 1659 to a musically gifted family. HE was said to begun composing at the age of 9. In 1679, he was appointed the organist of Westminster Abbey, and devoted himself entirely to the composition of sacred music. He married in 1682, and five years later he resumed writing music for the theatre. He composed an anthem and two elegies for Queen Mary II’s funeral. He died in 1695, at the height of his career. The cause of death is believed to have been tuberculosis. He was buried adjacent to the organ at Westminster Abbey.
Season One[]
Late at night, Richard Guthrie returns to the Barlow Estate to find Miranda Barlow playing Purcell’s Chaconne on her clavichord. Guthrie correctly identifies the peace, prompting Miranda to compliment his educated ear. Richard explains that his father had him tutored and adds that there is a profound sense of sadness in Purcell’s pieces, and says that he understands their appeal given her circumstances.
Quotes[]
“The music you were playing, that's Purcell's Chaconne if I'm not mistaken.”
“You have an educated ear."
"My father employed a tutor for all his children so that they might learn to appreciate music. I took to it the least of my siblings. But for reasons beyond me, some of it stuck. There's a pronounced sense of sadness in Purcell's pieces. Considering your circumstances, I can understand their appeal.”
