House of Stuart

The Royal Arms of Queen Anne, the last Stuart monarch.

The House of Stuart is the former Royal Family of the British Empire. The last Stuart monarch was Queen Anne. The Crown is often used as a metonym for the monarch and the royal family.

The original title of the Stuart monarchs was the King or Queen of England, Scotland, France and Ireland, however with the Acts of Union it became King of Great Britain, France and Ireland.

History[]

Background[]

The House of Stuart gained the throne of England in 1603 with the ascension of James I and VI. While he was King of England, Scotland and Ireland, the three countries remained separate. James' son Charles was deposed and beheaded, but his son Charles II ascended the throne in 1660.

Due to the Catholic sympathies of James II and VII, he was overthrown in the Glorious Revolution of 1688, and was replaced with his Protestant daughter Queen Mary and her husband William. James and his son, James Francis Edward Stuart, were sent into exile.

During the War of the Spanish Succession, James Francis Edward Stuart led a Jacobite Rising with French support in an attempt to invade England and reclaim the throne. However, the rebellion was put down, and Stuart was forced to flee.

After Queen Anne died, she was succeeded by George I of the House of Hanover, a German nobleman and her second cousin. Her half brother James was barred from the throne due to his Catholic faith.

Season One[]

Benjamin Hornigold, a notorious pirate and former Jacobites tells Gates that the last he heard, James Francis Edward Stuart had fled to France and was called the Pretender now[1]

Season Two[]

In flashbacks to 1705, Lord Thomas Hamilton suggests to Lieutenant James McGraw of the Royal Navy that as part of their plan to reform Nassau , they they offer a universal Royal Pardon. McGraw replies that it is a politically dangerous idea, and that the pirates are traitors to the Crown. Thomas asks what difference that makes and McGraw glibly replies that it makes some difference to the Crown.

That night, Thomas tells his father, Lord Proprietor Alfred Hamilton, about the pardon plan. Alfred says that he instructed his son that would secure the support of the Royal Navy in restoring commerce to the Bahamas, support which will disappear entirely if they hear they are to support a plan in open rebellion against the Crown. Alfred asks his son how he expects to distract Queen Anne from the War of the Spanish Succession to issue the pardons, but Thomas says an act of Parliament would suffice[2]
