Captain Jean Presberty was a Frenchman who commanded the Spanish treasure galleon Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación y Desengaño during the War of the Spanish Succession.

Biography[]

Background[]

During the War of the Spanish Succession, Presberty’s ship was attacked by two privateer vessels led by Woodes and Thomas Rogers. The ensuing battle lasted days, with the privateers hounding the Spanish with their two ships. Just before he ordered his colors struck, a shot from his ship’s stern chasers hit the Duke, the Rogers’ flagship, right at the helm. The shot injured Woodes and killed Thomas. Outraged at the death of his brother, Woodes butchered the entire Spanish crew, beginning with Captain Presberty, and Woodes made sure to drag out the process. Rogers then proceeded to slaughter the other 72 men on the ship, leaving only one alive in order to spread the tale.

Season Four[]

When Captain Berringer asks Woodes Rogers if he has what it takes to defeat Edward Teach after Teach requested that Eleanor be delivered to him in exchange for his departure. Rogers tells the story of the Battle off the Coast of Mexico. Rogers explains how he slaughtered the entire prize crew to avenge his brother’s death. Woodes says that his instinct is the same now as it was then, and he will show them the  consequences of threatening that which he holds most dear.

Trivia[]

  • Presberty was not killed, but held hostage in the aftermath of the battle. After his release, an inquiry was launched into the events of the capture of the galleon. The hearing found that Jean Presberty was an inexperienced tactician and mariner who should not have been given command of the vessel. The court further found that a commission should not have been granted to a foreigner. Presberty was also found to be fully culpable for the ship's loss.
