Jenks was a pirate who acts as Captain Vane's right hand man. When Vane went ashore in Charles Town to rescue Captain Flint, he placed Jenks in charge of the ship with a skeleton crew.

Biography[]

Background[]

Jenks was initially one of the Baymen who served under Albinus. When Albinus retired from his pirate career, Jenks and the rest of the crew became lumberjacks and foremen for Albinus' timber business, and they supplemented their labor force with slaves.

In 1715, Charles Vane took control of the Baymen after killing Albinus in a duel, and he led them in taking over Fort Nassau. Vane was able to prevent a counterattack by making a deal with Eleanor Guthrie. Thus, Vane became the new Steward of the Fort and his crew the garrison. Jenks eventually becomes the quartermaster of the crew[1].

Season Two[]

When Eleanor comes to chastise Vane for refusing to come to the meetings of the Consortium and provide security for their operations, Jenks leads Eleanor to Vane's room, and makes her wait uncomfortably outside while they hear Vane having loud intercourse with a prostitute names Idelle. After hearing a halt to the loud moans, he allows Eleanor in[2].

Later, Vane spars with one of his men in the courtyard. He defeats the man to the approval of his crew. He is then approached by Ned Low. Low requests that Vane does not involve himself in the escalating feud between him and Eleanor Guthrie, having heard of their past together. Jenks remarks that he can't imagine a scenario where they would want to interfere in her affairs. Vane agrees, but warns Low that he might make new enemies by taking out the head of commerce in Nassau. Low then gives Vane a tribute of ten percent of his crew's last profits. That night, Jenks aids Vane in massacring Low's men for threatening Eleanor, and kills Mr Holmes. Jenks informs Vane that they've found Abigail, daughter to Peter Ashe, one of the most powerful and ruthless men in the New World[3].

When Flint returns and learns that Vane has taken over the fort, he joins forces with Benjamin Hornigold to remove him. They anchor the Spanish Man O' War outside the fort's field of fire and threaten to launch an assault unless Vane and his men depart, and they give them until the next sunrise. Flint sends a messenger who relays all of this to Eleanor, Vane and Jenks. Vane orders that Jenks prepare the guns on the northwest bastion and move everything they can to the southwest. Jenks answers that the southwest bastion is too weak to support any guns, and remarks that it is suspicious how Flint knew exactly where the fort would be defenseless, eyeing Eleanor as he says so. Vane orders him to inspect the battlements and find out how close they can get to the ship.

Jenks inspects the battlements again to the same result. As Eleanor prepares to leave, he orders that the men stop her. Vane asks what he is doing and Jenks answers that the Spanish warship is fully outside their field of fire, so they should hold Eleanor as a hostage and threaten to kill her the moment Flint fires his guns. Eleanor tries to explain that Flint will listen to her but Jenks shushes her. Vane steps up to Jenks and says that if he is questioning Vane's loyalties regarding Eleanor, then Jenks should either challenge him and fight him, or obey his orders. Jenks relents, and Eleanor is allowed to leave.

Vane's address to the crews of Nassau calling Flint a power hungry madman works, and the crew is joined by several dozen new recruits. When Vane sees them building additional defenses in the fort's courtyard, he asks Jenks who they are, and he answers that they are friends from the beach[4].

When Flint and Hornigold begin their bombardment, Vane and Jenks retreat with their men to the vaults below the fort. When it ceases, Jenks informs the captain that courtyard wall has been destroyed, along with the seaward facing batteries and most of the westward guns, furthermore a breach has been made in the northwest corridor. Vane asks him how many men they lost, and Jenks answered that 7 were killed and another 9 injured. The two then discuss that they have at most two hours until the final assault. Vane then orders Larson to take Abigail back to her cell and to keep her safe while he is gone. Jenks asks Vane where he is going, and Vane answers that Flint will always be able to find more men, and his force is too large to defeat. Vane says his plan is to cut its head off by killing Flint[5].

Eleanor later rescues Abigail after Vane refuses to hand her over in exchange for Flint calling off the assault, believing that it would turn his men against him. Instead, Vane and Jenks capture Richard Guthrie and kill him, crucifying him in the fort's courtyard and leaving a note for Eleanor attached. They follow Flint to Charles Town, concealing themselves in the marshes on the riverbank opposite the city[6].

At night, Vane, Jenks and their men assault the ship while Flint is ashore. They kill roughly 20 of their men, losing a number of their own, but they are able to capture the remaining 50, after which Jenks announces the ship is secure. However, John Silver and Vincent were able to hide belowdecks, and Silver cuts the ship's forestay to prevent Vane from sailing away and killing their crew mates. Vane and Jenks realize that they must have missed someone below, and they now cannot sail away without risking the loss of the foremast. Vane goes below and captures the pair. However, the Boat Captain of the Charles Town Militia arrives and announces that Flint has been arrested and will be tried and hanged the next day. The pirates have until the conclusion of the trial to flee, or their ship will be seized or sunk. Vane then announces that they will be rescuing Flint, because Nassau is strongest when feared, and the statement of one of Nassau's most notorious captains swinging over Charles Town is one Nassau cannot afford[7].

Jenks argues with Vane about the recklessness of the plan but Vane remains adamant about pursuing it. Jenks argues that they came to get the ship and they've got it so they should leave, and Vane repeats his explanation about how the statement is one Nassau can't afford. Vane then asks what the men think about his plan. Jenks answers that Vane is taking the men who think the rescue is a good idea with him and leaving the ones who don't with him. Jenks asks Vane what he expects him to say when they argue that they should just leave Vane ashore rather than participate in a battle whose outcome is uncertain. Vane answers that he should tell him it's in their best interests, and Jenks counters by saying they'll just laugh at this. Vane instructs Jenks to tell the crew that if they try to sail the ship with a skeleton crew, they are going to be chased, caught and killed.

After Vane departs, Yardley asks Jenks what their chances are if they run. Jenks says shorthanded against two ships he'd say they're even, but against three trained hunters, they're at least a dozen men short of even a prayer of success. After he leaves, a sick prisoner approaches Yardley.

Jenks sends Yardley and the Bayman Lieutenant to retrieve Silver, which they do after a brief scuffle with their prisoners. Inside the great cabin, Jenks explains to Silver that the battle ahead promises very little reward for his crew, but great risk, and he can't just leave due to a shortage of manpower. However, Vincent says that Silver can offer up names of their crew members who would be willing to defect and help them escape instead of launching a counterattack once freed. Vincent then tells Silver he told Jenks that they don't have any real connection to the crew, and they'll get safe passage back to Nassau if they help. Silver realizes that if he does this, the rest of the crew will be killed and refuses. Jenks then shoots Vincent and orders Silver to give him the names while they can still escape. He then has his men restrain Silver on top of a table, and begins smashing Silver's leg with the backside of an axe.

Vane's men take over several parts of the Battery, and turn the cannons on the town and the Charles Town Fleet, which begins to flee. Larson enters the cabin and warns Jenks that the fleet is scrambling and Jenks orders that they weigh the anchor, preferring to take a chance fleeing rather than fighting the ships. As Jenks prepares to cut Silver's throat, a knock is heard at the door and Jenks angrily shouts that he gave an order. The doors then burst open and the captured Walrus crew throws several flash grenades in before rushing in, overwhelming Jenks' men. Jenks grabs his axe and fights back, but Billy Bones enters the back of the cabin through the stern gallery balcony and kills Jenks with his sword[8].

Quotes[]

"I can't imagine what we'd have to gain by taking an interest in the affairs of the Guthrie woman."

- Jenks to Captains Vane and Low in XI.

"The situation is as we feared. That warship is fully outside our field of fire. And given our severe disadvantage, might she provide us valuable leverage? Make sure Flint knows the moment he fires those guns, her body gets dumped over the wall."

- Jenks to Vane in XII.

"The conflict ahead promises much risk for us and very little reward to compensate for it. And so we would like to leave this place. Now, your friend over here says you're just the man to help us do it. My problem is a shortage of manpower. I need more men than I have to fully crew this ship. And I can't simply release your crewmates indiscriminately. I'd be inviting a counterattack to reclaim the ship. So I want names."

- Jenks to John Silver in XVIII.
