―Julius

Julius is a former slave and the leader of the bloody slave rebellion against the plantation masters of New Providence Island. However, the question is whether his powerful army of slaves be an ally for the pirates or a new threat.

Biography[]

Season Four[]

Julius, a slave on the Edwards Estate, looks on defiantly as the slaves are being cruelly disciplined, beaten with burning brooms, to instill fear against joining the pirate revolt after the raid on the Underhill estate. When word comes in that Nassau has fallen to the pirates, Julius leads his own slave rebellion against the plantation masters. The rebellion spreads to the other estates in the interior, and Julius gathers a powerful army of former slaves, angry at everyone, including the pirates.  Madi learns of this information from Ruth, a slave freed by the Pirate Resistance on the Underhill Estate. Some of the slaves at the Underhill Estate are chained up to prevent them from joining Julius' army. Silver later asks Ruth to broker a meeting between him and Julius, so they can reforge the pirate-slave alliance[1]

XXXIV-Julius

John Silver tries to forge a new alliance with the plantation slave by offering up Billy Bones to their retribution for the part he played in the disastrous Underhill raid. However, when Silver finally meets Julius, he’s unimpressed, questioning the integrity of the pirates since Silver gave up a friend as a necessary sacrifice. Julius expresses the concern that the pirates will give up Julius and his people when it suits them, and then they will be enslaved once more. However, news of the Spanish invasion backed by Woodes Rogers is brought to Underhill Estate. Silver elects to consolidate his forces and remain entrenched at the plantation, rather than risk being caught in the open trying to move to the Walruswhich is waiting on the southern coast under Featherstone's command should they wish to retreat. He tells Julius to bring his men and his people to the Underhill Estate, telling him that there only chance of survival is to stand and fight together, and that they can make this the last battle to win the island.  Julius decides to side with the pirates. Silver and his men are entrenched on the Underhill estate, having been forced to retreat into a building after a combined attack from the Spanish soldiers and cavalry. All hope seems lost until Julius and his army launched a surprise attack, forcing the Spanish to retreat. After Flint arrives with news of Madi's death, Silver breaks down. Julius and his men retreat with the pirates to the Walrus and then to the  Maroon Island. There, they find the camp full of pirates and Maroons from across the New World, who arrived after hearing of the Fall of Nassau to help wage war against the British Empire[2].

XXXV-1

Julius at the war meeting.

However, Julius has no interest in Captain Flint’s ambitious war against civilisation that will echo across the New World, seeing only a tragic end. Flint and the gathered pirate and Maroon leaders plan on their opening moves in the war, but Julius calls them all fools if they think this is going where Flint says it is. Flint asks Julius if Flint has not proven to him his commitment to their common cause. Julius asks what happens when their enemies realize all they need to do to defeat this alliance is to take away that common cause. Julius says that when that happens, it will be his people sold back into their chains. Silver then angrily asks Julius what he is doing at the meeting. Julius reminds Silver that he saved him from the fight he started and could not finish, and now they are planning on starting a war that no one could hope to finish. Silver says that the war is happening, and the Maroon Camp will fight it. Julius says he is a free man and wishes to stay that way. The Maroon Queen arrives and says they all do, and asks Julius to join her.

XXXV-Julius

The Queen explains that she once thought like Julius, that because she had reason to mistrust the pirates, it meant that she had to. She says that she was wrong, and they can find common interest with them, and that she has fought alongside them. Julius says he has also fought alongside them, but he did so to find security, but what they want does not sound like security to him. The Queen says that there is no lasting security to be had at the island, and they are fighting to change that. Julius replies that nothing is lasting, but to him, the Maroon community is everything he’d dreamed of; a place to be free and safe for months, even years. He adds that he has heard that there is treasure buried on the island that could purchase whatever is needed to survive. The Queen says that no one has been this close to changing the world before. Julius replies that no one changes the world all at once like they are trying, the world is too strong for that[3]

When the Walrus leaves to rescue Madi, who is alive and held captive by Rogers, who demands the cache of gems in exchange for her life, they take the gems with them against Flint's wishes by order of Silver. When it is revealed that Silver brought the gems with him, Flint is enraged. Flint says that the war was underway, but now Julius has something he can use to convince people against it. Now Julius can point at the empty hole in the ground and say "this is what happens when you trust a pirate[4]

After Rogers is defeated at Skeleton Island, Silver and Flint go ashore to dig it up from where Flint hid it. En route, they stop to discuss things. Silver says that when Flint and Madi are reunited, nothing, not even Julius, will be able to stop them. Silver sends Flint to James Oglethorpe's estate in Savannah,  to live out the remainder of his days in humane internment beside Thomas Hamilton. He then offers the treaty Woodes Rogers proposed to Madi to the Maroon and pirate leaders, who agree to stand down in exchange for their remaining free. Madi later accuses Silver of emboldening Julius and sending Madi away so that she couldn't oppose it, which he admits to. In the end, Julius remains on Maroon Island after the deal is struck between Jack Rackham and Marion Guthrie that will keep the community safe[5].

Quotes[]

By Julius[]

"Amongst pirates, loyalty changes quickly, it seems. If a man can be replaced so easily, how can I know that his promises won't be, too?"

- Julius to John Silver in XXXIV.

"I once thought like you. That because I had reason to mistrust the pirates, that it necessarily followed that I must mistrust them. But it is not so. For there is also reason to see common interest with them. I have fought alongside these men. "

"I have fought alongside these men. But I did it so that I might find security. But what they are now arguing for... does not sound like security to me."

"There is no lasting security to be had here. We'll fight to change that."

"Nothing is lasting. But months, years, that is meaningful and it can be had here. You now have the resources to have it here. There is a treasure in the ground here. It'd purchase whatever is needed to survive."

"No one has ever been this close, this near a chance to change the world."

"No one changes the world. Not like this. Not all at once. The world is too strong for that."

- The Maroon Queen and Julius in XXXV.

About Julius[]

But with as much anger towards the pirates and anyone who would call himself friend to a pirate as they do towards the English." - Ruth to Madi in XXXII.
