Mexico is a region of the Viceroyalty of New Spain located in southern North America.

History[]

Background[]

The area of Mexico has been inhabited for thousands of years. Prior to Spanish arrival, the most powerful entity in Mexico was the Aztec Empire, a large empire made wealthy by the gold and silver in Mexico.

The Spanish, led by conquistador Hernan Cortes, conquered the Aztec Empire over the course of two years between 1519 and 1521.

After the Spanish conquest over the region was completed, Mexico became an important source of gold and silver, making the Spanish Empire rich. Every year, treasure fleets would depart from Veracruz, the most valuable items being the gold and silver from Mexico and Peru.

When Albinus led a large and fearsome pirate crew, he and his men sacked the city of Campeche[1]

During the War of Spanish Succession, Woodes Rogers attempted to board a Spanish galleon, Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación y DesengañoThe ship fought back far longer than she should have, and just before striking her colors, fired a shot at a very implausible angle that struck Rogers' ship at the helm, leaving him scarred and killing his brother, Thomas. Afterwards, an enraged Rogers slaughtered the entire crew of the galleon, one by one until only one man remained. He then deposited that last men in Acapulco to spread the tale[2]

Season One[]

Charles Vane reminds Albinus that he and his men sacked the city of Campeche when they sailed as pirates[1]

Season Three[]

Woodes Rogers tells Eleanor Guthrie the story of how he got his scar and his brother's death in the battle with the Spanish galleon off the coast of Mexico[3]

Season Four[]

Woodes Rogers tells Captain Berringer about the story of his brother's death in the battle with the Spanish galleon off the coast of Mexico. He adds that he butchered all but one member of the crew as revenge after they surrendered, and dropped off the one survivor in Acapulco.  He says this as proof that he will do whatever is necessary and possibly beyond that in his battle with Edward Teach[2]
