Biography[]
Background[]
Mr. McGraw was the father of James McGraw. The two did not seem to be very close, or McGraw died when his son was young, as James was raised by his grandfather who was a fisherman in Padstow.
Season Two[]
In a flashback to 1705, it is revealed that the notorious pirate captain James Flint was a Royal Navy lieutenant named James McGraw. His father was a carpenter, according to Lord Thomas Hamilton, who is amazed by James’ reputation as a well read rising star at the Admiralty.
In another flashback, Lieutenant McGraw sits at a bar and notices several officers laughing at him. When he confronts them, a Mr. Pickram reveals that he is jealous that the son of a carpenter’s mate got such a prestigious posting as the liaison to the Hamilton family.
Quotes[]
"A number of your superiors are former schoolmates of mine. I canvassed them about your reputation... the son of a carpenter, no record of any formal schooling, and yet more literate than any three boys I knew at Eton. You are a rising star with a bright future in the Admiralty."
- Thomas Hamilton to James Flint in IX.
"Someone of your station... son of a carpenter's mate given a chance to socialize with a lord."
Trivia[]
- McGraw is first referred to as a carpenter, and then a carpenter's mate in the next episode. It's possible that he was promoted at some point.
