Mr. Smalls was a member of the New Providence Militia under the command of Captain Benjamin Hornigold. He led a special company of men from Underhill's plantation staff who were skilled in hunting down escaped slaves in consort with the Militia and the Redcoats at the Battle of the Maroon Island.

Season Three[]
Mr. Smalls attends the war meeting with Eleanor Guthrie, Benjamin Hornigold and Mr. Underhill. Commodore Chamberlain arrives, confused as to why an additional three ships are being outfitted alongside his. Eleanor informs him that Hornigold and his private militia are joining him, as well as a special company of men from Underhill's plantation staff with experience in hunting down escaped slaves. Chamberlain refuses to fight alongisde undisciplined conscripts, believing his force to be sufficient. Eleanor tells him that she knows Flint better than any of them and that Flint expects Chamberlain's force, so they need a force that Flint does not expect.
Smalls accompanies Hornigold to the Maroon Island, to retrieve the cache of gems from the pirates and the Maroons. The British bombard the pirates’ beach defenses and send their men ashore on longboats. Despite some initial success in stemming the tide, the pirates are forced to retreat after the Redcoats begin using mortars on them. Hornigold dissuadesMajor Rollins from leading the men into the forest after Flint, and the Redcoats and militia make camp and wait on the beach. Dobbs then defects to their side and says he can lead the British to the camp in the jungle. To prove himself, Dobbs kills a pirate prisoner. He then leads Hornigold, Smalls, the rest of the militia and the Redcoats to the camp. When they arrive on the shore opposite the camp, Hornigold sends two of his men to crawl into the brush as scouts. While they watch the camp, one of them is shot in the shoulder and dragged back to safety by his partner. Hornigold then orders Smalls to get a message to Major Rollins, telling him that he can deploy his men to their position, and to finish the battle as quickly as possible. Smalls leaves to carry out his orders.
Rollins brings his men forward to Hornigold's position. The Redcoats begin firing volleys of musket and mortar fire into the camp. As this happens, Hornigold notices Dobbs smirking at him. He then orders his forces to pull back. A confused Smalls asks Hornigold what he means and Hornigold shouts at him to pull back, but at that moment the call of a horn pierces the air. Dozens of pirates and Maroons then leap out of the brush and begin attacking the Redcoats and militia. Smalls is killed in the ensuing ambush, along with Hornigold and the rest of the militia.
