Mrs. Barlow tells Flint that her neighbors must have seen him arrive last night, for they have planted a spy by the scrub pine. Flint, knowledgeable of these antics, asks if it is the crone with the crooked nose. Miranda informs him that she passed away, and that Lambrick’s new “chief of intelligencers” is Mrs. Archer, who has “eyes like saucers.”
