The Mutiny aboard Rogers' Fleet occurred after the outbreak of the War of the Quadruple Alliance. Woodes Rogers' First Fleet  was called back to London, but several hundred soldiers mutined in order to remain behind and continue fighting the pirates

History[]

Background[]

Woodes Rogers, the newly appointed Royal Governor of New Providence Island, had initially been successful in asserting his rule over Nassau. However, Captain Flint formed an alliance with a group of Maroons in the hopes of driving Rogers out, while Edward Teach commanded a large Pirate Fleet that had departed Nassau. The two forces banded together and dealt Rogers' forces a devestating blow at the Battle of the Maroon Island.

Shortly after the battle, war broke out with the Spanish Empire yet again. Commodore Peter Chamberlain was ordered to return to London with Rogers' ships and the remains of the company of 700 British Regulars

The Mutiny[]

Captain Berringer of the British Army mutinied, remaining in Nassau with several hundred soldiers. They desired to avenge their defeat at the hands of the pirates and Maroons, and swore a loyalty oath to Rogers personally. 

Aftermath[]

Rogers' force had been depleted from 700 soldiers and eight ships to a few hundred men and one sloop, the GloucestershireMeanwhile, the Pirate Resistance led by Billy Bones had taken control over large swathes of New Providence Island. To combat this, Captain Berringer conducted Purges in Nassau of anyone suspected of having loyalty to the pirates.

Trivia[]

  • The event as portrayed in the show seems to be a combination of multiple events that occurred in real life. Shortly after establishing himself in Nassau, Commdore Chamberlain abandoned Rogers, leaving the fledgeling colony extremely vulnerable. Rogers also faced a genuine mutiny aboard the Buckwhich had been sent to Havana on a trade mission. En route, the crew, which was a mixture of Rogers' men and former pirates, turned pirate.
