New York City, formerly New Amsterdam, is a large and important port city on the east coast of North America.
History[]
Background[]
The first European visitor to the area was Giovanni da Verrazzano, an Italian in command of a French ship in 1524. The area was inhabited by Algonquian speaking Indians. An English explorer working for the Dutch East India Company, Henry Hudson, sailed his ship up the Narrows searching for a passage to Asia.
The first Dutch fur tradition posts and settlements were established in 1641. Eventually, a city sprang up in the area named New Amsterdam, which was first incorporated as a city on February 2, 1653.
On August 27, 1664, four English frigates sailed into the harbor and demanded the surrender of the city and New Netherlands. Two weeks later, Governor Peter Stuyvesant capitulated. The town was reincorporated under English law in June of 1665 as New York.
A member of the Walrus crew, Cregg, died while taking the prize ship the Pembroke. In his locker, Gates found 12 pesos, a busted pocket watch, and a letter with instructions to deliver it to Cregg’s sister in New York. Gates bought a round for his men with the pesos and traded the watch for a prostitute's services. Gates then spent two weeks that winter trying to find Cregg’s sister and deliver the letter. Gates searched all over but was unable to find her. On the way back to Nassau, Gates waited until the ship was in open water and couldn’t see land in any direction and threw the letter overboard[1].
Season One[]
