Oates was a pirate aboard the Walrus who was accused of stealing rations while the ship was becalmed in the Doldrums.

Season Three[]
Oates and Palmer accuse each other of stealing a day's worth of rations. Both are brought before the crew, where Silver tells them that stealing food during a time of crisis necessitates a severe penalty. He then implores them, as both friend and quartermaster, to confess to the crime. Oates then says that he is innocent, and simply could not have committed the deed he is accused of. Palmer then tells him to shut up and proclaims his own innocence. While Silver deliberates, Flint walks forward and shoots Palmer in the head, to the shock of the entire crew. As Oates thanks him for seeing the truth, Flint reloads his pistol. Oates elated face quickly falls and he begs Flint not to kill him. He continues

to insist that he is innocent and Flint points the pistol at his head. Flint briefly hallucinates that he is pointing his pistol at a bloodied Miranda Barlow, who whispers "forgive me." Flint then shoots Oates in the head, and Oates falls beside Palmer.
