The Viceroyalty of Peru is an imperial province of the Spanish Empire in South America.
Geography[]
The colony covers most of the continent, with its northern boundary being the Isthmus of Darien and extending all the way to the southern coast of of the continent, but the primary administrative centers of the colony are in the northwest. They are bordered to the west by the Pacific Ocean and to the east by the Portuguese colony of Brazil.
People[]
The original native inhabitants were decimated by the Spanish colonizers. Eventually, the colony was divided into several social classes. Slaves were at the lowest level, followed by natives and free people of color. The middle class was occupied by tradesman and noble natives, while the top was occupied by the oidors, the judges of the Royal Audencias. The economy is powered by the gold and silver mined in the Andes, which are shipped back to Spain in the yearly treasure fleets.
History[]
Background[]
The Viceroyalty was created in 1542 after the Spanish Conquest of Peru. As the Spanish settled the area, the gold and silver mined in the Andes made the viceroyalty the principal source of Spanish wealth and power in the Americas.
Due to their wealth, cities in the viceroyalty often fell prey to pirates, particularly the English and Dutch. In 1671, the English privateer Henry Morgan sacked Panama City. At some point, the pirate Albinus sacked Cartagena.
Season One[]
Charles Vane reminds Albinus that before he became a timber merchant, he and his crew were feared throughout the New World, having sacked Cartagena.
Season Four[]
Flint and the Pirate-Maroon alliance discuss possible first strikes on St. Ann's Bay, Bridgetown and the fact that the rest of Barbados has fallen to a slave rebellion. A Maroon Chief believes he could recruit seven or eight hundred men. Flint then calculates that that would mean they would have 1,200 men to land anywhere they wished with ships to support the landing. Flint remarks that it is similar to what Henry Morgan had when he sacked Panama. Flint says that they could sack Boston with that force.
