Philip V is the King of Spain and the Spanish Empire. He was the first Spanish king from the House of Bourbon.

Biography[]

Background[]

Charles II chose Philip as his successor and Philip ascended the throne after his death. However, Philip was French and many feared that this would shift the balance of power in Europe due to the unification of the Spanish and French Empire

Season One[]

Flint tells Richard Guthrie about how the Urca de Lima carries a cargo so rich, King Phillip was very anxious to see it launched. The operative in charge of it, Vazquez, warned his superiors in the Casa de Contratación that it was too late to send her to Spain, storm season was upon them and no escort to be found to guard her.[1]

Season Two[]

After taking the Spanish Man O’ War and returning to Nassau, Flint tells Silver that the soldiers guarding the wreck of the Urca de Lima are four days by longboat from St. Augustine. Flint figures that they have a week, maybe two at most, before King Phillip gets his gold back[2]

Richard Guthrie tells Flint that his goal of courting Lord Ashe and capturing the Urca gold oppose each other. For while Ashe tries to persuade Parliament that the pirates are reasonable men ready to govern themselves peacefully, they won’t listen, because in the next room, the ambassador to the court of King Phillip will be shaking his fists in rage, screaming about how the pirates just stole five million Spanish dollars from Phillip’s treasury[3]

The Urca de Lima gold is later taken by the crew of Jack Rackham, who bring it to Fort Nassau.[4]

Season Three[]

Woodes Rogers' expedition to Nassau is partly funded by Spain, who give him eight weeks to return the entirety of the Urca treasure to Havana, otherwise, a fleet of ten ships and 1,500 soldiers would be sent to to raze Nassau[5].

Max offers Rogers her portion of the Urca gold, which was  clandestinely converted into more easily transportable commodities such as gems. However, Mrs. Hudson, Rogers' chambermaid and secretly a spy for Spanish intelligence,  reveals that Spain knows about the exchanges and  Phillip is said to be furious over the theft of the Urca gold and the attempt to secret it away. Should Rogers fail to transport all of the treasure, Havana's Fleet would be sent to destroy them. At sea, Edward Teach and Charles Vane raid a Spanish Merchant Ship en route to Ocracoke Island. On board, they find a Spanish Intelligence Officer of the Casa de Contratación. After trying to burn as much of the intelligence he was carrying, he kills himself after saying "long live the king." As they sift through the documents, Ellers asks what they were and Teach says they could have been anything from silver shipment inventories to private letters of King Philip[6]

Season Four[]

After the Invasion of Nassau, Governor Woodes Rogers remarks that Spain and England are too busy fighting over which king sits on which throne to focus on the real threat that the pirates pose[7]

After the pirates retake Nassau, Rogers travels to Havana to secure the aid of Governor Raja in driving them out. Rogers says that they are only enemies because their kings are at war with each other, but that war is meaningless to him in light of the pirate threat. He asks Raja how long it will be before the pirates and Maroons turn their eyes towards Havana if they succeed, and how long it will be before Spanish slaves are emboldened by the victory in Nassau. Rogers asks Raja to envision how he will wish he'd taken Rogers' offer to kill this in its cradle when he is forced to write to King Philip, begging for aid in defeating the army of pirates and slaves at his door.  Raja tells Rogers that he heard of Rogers’ slaughtering of the crew of Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación y Desengaño. Raja tells Rogers that he knows he wielded the sword that killed his brother, and Rogers admits to it. Raja tells Rogers not to insult him by suggesting that they are only enemies because his king tells him they are. Ultimately however, Rogers is able to convince Raja[8].
