Santo Domingo is a large port city on the island of Hispaniola and capital of the Spanish colony of the same name.

Background[]
Christopher Columbus arrived on the island in 1492. In 1495, the settlement was officially named Santo Domingo. It became known as the “Gateway to the Caribbean” and the most important town in Hispaniola.
