Geography[]

Scotland covers the northern third of the island of Great Britain. Mainland Scotland has a 96 mile border with England to the southeast, and is otherwise surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean to the north and west, the North Sea to the northeast and the Irish Sea to the south. Furthermore, Scotland includes nearly 800 islands.

People[]

The Scottish people are largely descended from two ancient peoples, the Picts and the Gaels. The population is Christian, the two major denominations being Calvinist Protestant and Catholic.

History[]

Background[]

Scotland and England had warred for centuries, which resulted in the House of Stuart ruling Scotland. Beginning in 1603, the House of Stuart also became the ruling family of England. The two were separate countries until under Queen Anne, the countries were brought together with the Acts of Union to form a new state- the Kingdom of Great Britain.

After the Catholic monarchs were deposed in the Glorious Revolution, Scotland was a base for many Jacobites. During the War of the Spanish Succession, James Francis Edward Stuart attempted to lead French forces to Scotland to join with the Jacobites there and reclaim the throne. However, the attempt failed, and Stuart was forced to flee.

Season One[]

John Silver interrupts Max giving a hand job to a Scottish pirate after escaping Captain Flint. After Silver refuses to leave, the pirate packs up his things and leaves, but not before saying to Silver “have you no decency.” Max calls out after him to come back later.

When Gates visits Benjamin Hornigold to ask to use his ship and crew as consort to Flint in the hunt for the Urca de Lima, he asks Hornigold if he’s heard anything from his friends in Edinburgh about James Francis Edward Stuart. Hornigold tells Gates that the last he heard, Stuart had fled to France and that they were calling him the Pretender.
