Biography[]
Season Two[]
After attempting and failing to win over the men by telling them embarassing pieces of gossip seen by Randall, John Silver explains his strategy to Flint. Silver says that he grew up in St. John's Home for Poor Orphan Boys. At the orphanage, there was a boy named Solomon Little. Little had a cleft palate, a spotted face and mismatched ears. Silver says that if the laws of nature applied, the other boys would have beaten him daily. However, no one ever touched him because Little had figured out that the key to winning them over wasn't getting them to like him, but to remind them of how much they dislike each other. Little would stand up every day and make his address to the boys, and Silver says that none of them could last a day without it. Flint remarks that Silver is dealing with grown men, not boys. Silver responds that when it comes to the joy of ridiculing one's peers, there is little difference.[1]
Much later, Silver tells the crew a personal story as they near Charles Town. He tells them a story about the first time he saw the city and its walls. He says that he observed the hanging of a pirate in the square named Solomon Little. Billy Bones reveals that the story is a combination of two stories belonging to two men on the crew- Bernard and Jeffries.[2]
Season Four[]
Flint reveals that he knows that all that Silver has told about his past is a lie, merely an amalgamation of elements from stories told by various crew members over the years, lending serious doubt to the existence of Solomon Little.[3]
Quotes[]
"I spent three years at the St. John's Home for Poor Orphan Boys. During that time, I knew a boy named Solomon Little. Cleft palette, spotted face, and the most unfortunate set of ears I have, to this day, ever seen." - John Silver to Flint in X.
"We watch a gathering in the square-- a gallows. And we watch as they haul up a man named Solomon Little."
- John Silver to the crew in XVI.
Trivia[]
- There is a fan theory that the first Solomon Little character described by Silver is in fact Silver himself. This theory is supported by the fact that both are cunning survivors with a need to have the respect of others.
