"You think that ship's here on patrol? That she just happened by this place at this time? That ship is an escort. It's the only explanation."
James Flint to Hal Gates[src]

The Revenge is a Spanish war ship, formerly of the Spanish Navy, until it became a pirate ship under the command of Dufresne, then the reinstated Captain James Flint during the Golden Age of Piracy.

History

Season One

At some point during 1715, this ship was patrolling in the waters off the coast of Florida. There she encountered two pirate ships, the Walrus and the Ranger. Though the crew of the Walrus managed to fool the Spaniards into thinking that the Walrus is a Spanish merchantman from St. Augustine, the pirate ship later opened fire on the Man O' War. In the ensuing battle, the Man O' War managed to defeat both pirate ships, destroying the Ranger and heavily damaging the Walrus. Later, the Man O' War docked at the entrance of the cove where another Spanish ship, the treasure galleon Urca de Lima, was wrecked.

Season Two

However, the remaining pirates from the Walrus managed to sneak aboard the Man O' War when the majority of its crew was on the beach, collecting the Urca's gold. The pirates successfully overpowered the remaining guards and took control of the ship, sailing for Nassau.

During the voyage, the winds changed and the crew decided to sail east. The pirates encountered the British merchant vessel which surrendered when the pirates hoisted the black flag. However, when the British captain realized Dufresne was not Flint, the merchant crew attacked the pirates, and Flint took command. The Man O' War opened fire on the merchant ship, completely destroying it and leaving no survivors. Later, the pirates voted to have Flint reinstalled as captain.

On the way to Nassau, John Silver was conducting the "goings-on". Silver told the crew that they were to moor near Nassau, but remain out of sight of the city itself. One of the crew demanded that they'd have a vote about where to dock. They were interrupted by the sighting of New Providence Island.

When they reached the island, Flint was detailing to Dufresne the reasons why they were mooring so far from sight of Nassau. He also told Dufresne about his intentions to reach Captain Hornigold and attempt to get Hornigold to act as his consort in retrieving the Urca's gold from the beach. Atop decks, Flint sent two men back to spy on the movements of the Urca's crew so that when he returned, they would know the schedule of the men they were going to be attacking.

Returning to the Man O' War, Flint's crew and Hornigold's crew have come together. Flint gave them a speech, stating that before they could achieve success with the Urca's gold, they must first neutralize the threat posed by Vane and his fortress.

Aboard the Man O' War, Hornigold is discussing the fortress's weaknesses with the senior officers. Flint asked him how long it would take Hornigold to rebuild any sections that were destroyed in the attack. Hornigold told him that it would take at least ten weeks. The fortress would need to be rebuilt as quickly as possible because the power of the fortress was the only thing keeping the British and Spanish fleets from approaching Nassau.

In the bay, Eleanor approached Flint's ship in a rowing boat. When she boarded, she told Flint what was occurring in the city, wherein Vane was attempting to turn the unaffiliated pirates in Nassau against Flint. When Eleanor suggested that Flint move his ship away and that he'd allow her, he, and Vane to have a sit down discussion, Flint completely rejected the idea and stated that he was absolutely not abandoning his position where he had such a good advantage over Vane.

Flint told Silver to go to the beach and to use his particular skill set to try and persuade the unaffiliated pirates on the beach to join his side and not Vane's.

Aboard the ship, Hornigold was expressing his logistical concerns about the coming attack in regards to the number of men that each side had to fight against each other.

Before dawn, Mr. Scott and Flint were talking aboard Flint's ship. Flint asked Scott his advice. Scott told him that there must be another way other than open war among the pirates. Scott advised that if the pirates were divided, then they could easily lose Nassau to either the British or the Spanish. Below decks, the men were poised to launch their attack against the fortress. Flint told them to open fire.

Flint and his gun crews continued to pound the fortress, taking huge chunks of wall out of it. Flint called for a cease fire and commanded that the men prepare to move ashore to storm the fortress.

Flint brought Mrs. Barlow and Abigail Ashe aboard the Man'o'War, taking her back to Charles Town to the safety of her father, Lord Peter Ashe. She wrote in her journal about how her preconceived notions about pirates had begun to change. Flint and Mrs. Barlow began to discuss how well Abigail seemed to be taking everything and then reminisce about how she was the last time they saw her, when she was just five, hiding behind her mother's dress.

On the way, Silver was giving the "goings-on" to the crew. He began to tell a story about the horrors that he had seen when he had last visited Charles Town. He told them about the gunboats that patrol the harbour and about an execution he witnessed of a pirate. Mr. Scott and Billy Bones were observing this when Billy revealed to Scott that Silver was just retelling a story from another pirate and that you couldn't believe a thing that comes out of Silver's mouth. As Silver was finishing his story, he saw Nicholas snickering in the back of the crowd. Following his speech, Silver confronted Nicholas and Vincent below decks, demanding that they shut their mouths and not do anything that might give their scheme away. When Nicholas walked away, Silver told Vincent that Nicholas had the potential to be a serious problem for them both.

Elsewhere on the ship, Billy told Flint that DeGroot thought they can gain some speed by adjusting the sails, but since this was to be done at night, it was riskier than usual. Flint told him to go ahead and do it. As Billy leaves, Abigail asked about him, since his demeanour was not like the other pirates on the crew. Flint told Abigail that Billy's parents were Levellers from Kensington who spoke out about the impressment of men and boys into the Navy. One day, Billy was handing out pamphlets supporting the abolition of impressment when Billy himself was taken by a press gang. When he was rescued by Flint many years later, Billy killed the man who had captured him. However, he refused to go home because he didn't think his father would approve that he had become a murderer.

On the top deck, De Groot ordered Nicholas to go up the main mast and release the sails. As he was up there, Vincent and Silver were below decks and Vincent revealed that he had taken care of the problem with Nicholas. He revealed that he had sabotaged the footing rope on the main mast, knowing that Nicholas was going to go up there, thus leading to Nicholas falling to his death. Silver was aghast and ran to the top deck just in time to see Nicholas fall and die.

In the morning, the men were sewing Nicholas into his burial bag. Silver confronted Vincent about his decision to murder Nicholas. Vincent told Silver that earlier in the day Silver gave him a look that indicated that they should dispose of the problem. Silver denied ever giving such a look to Vincent. Later, the men above decks buried Nicholas at sea.

Soon, Flint's ship arrived in Charles Town harbour. Below decks, Abigail spoke to Flint and Barlow. She told them the reason why her father had changed from a reasonable man to such a hater of pirates. She stated that it was the murder of Alfred Hamilton aboard the Maria Aleyne by Flint and his men that changed his view and that from then on he would dedicate his life to eradicating piracy from the New World. In light of this, Abigail requested that as soon as she was returned that Flint should turn around and sail away.

Up on the top deck, Flint told Billy and Scott that he wanted them to stay out of range of the patrol boats in the harbour. If they stayed out of range it was a sign that they mean no harm. He also told them that he didn't want a single gun port to be opened and no men were to carry weapons on deck. Flint then told Barlow that he wished her to stay aboard because he feared that Ashe will see her as someone who was aiding a pirate and hang her as well as him. Barlow then told Flint that she was the reason Alfred Hamilton was killed because she was the one who uncovered that he was going to be a passenger on that ship. So she felt that she was as culpable of that sin as Flint was. Flint reconsidered and allowed her to join him in going ashore.

A man approached in a small boat from the shore asking for Captain Vane. Flint responded that he was not Vane and that he had no demands, but that he was a request to see Peter Ashe. While Flint and Barlow are in Charles Town, Vane and his crew take over the ship. Much of the crew are killed, including Randall and Joshua. Once the remainder of Flint's crew was subdued, Vane took Billy aside to the captain's cabin. He told Billy that the intened purpose of his and Rackham's original scheme of backing Singelton to replace Flint was to gain talented new recruits, the crown jewel being Billy. Billy then explained why Flint had brought them there, England was coming to reclaim Nassau and reconciliation was the only way to survive.

Silver was below decks when the assault began with Vincent, to prevent Vane from sailing away and killing the rest of their crew, Silver cuts the forestay, making the foremast too unstable to sail and causing the entire ship to lurch. Vane went below decks to find the sabateurs and was briefly subdued by Silver and Vincent before overpowering both of them. It was during this brief struggle that a small boat approached the ship and man announced that Captain Flint had been captured and was awaiting a swift trial. The ship had the choice of leaving before the next day, or if they remain, being seized or sunk. Vane then made a speech to his crew, saying that the most feared pirate captain of Nassau being hanged is a statement that they cannot afford to be made. For if Flint is hanged, no one will ever fear the pirates of Nassau again, he then suggests that they get Flint "the hell out of there."

The next day, Jenks and Vane argue over Vane's plan to rescue Flint. Jenks believes it is reckless and complains that the half of the crew that Vane is leaving him with think the plan is foolish and want to flee. Vane reminds him that they do not have the manpower to sail the ship. While this is happening in the captain's cabin, Silver and Billy talk on deck, chained along with the rest of their crew. Vane comes along and tells Billy to keep his men in line, so as not to provoke a violent reaction from Vane's men. He also promises Billy that once Flint is freed, the rest of the crew will be too. Vane then departs with half his crew for Charles Town.

Back aboard Flint's ship, Jenks and Yardley are discussing their odds of successfully escaping the harbour using only their skeleton crew. They realize that their chances are nil with only the men they have. As they are walking along the ship, Vincent, who is pretending to be ill, confronts Yardley and tells him that he has a plan to get them all out of there.

Elsewhere on the ship, Bones is telling Silver that the men are growing a support for Silver to be made Quartermaster. Bones tells Silver that the men know that if Silver had not cut the forestay that Vane would likely have sailed away and killed all of them. Yardley then appears and unchains Silver and takes him away. As he is being taken away, Bones and the rest of Flint's crew attempt to intervene and save Silver, but they are swiftly put back down.

Aboard Flint's ship, Silver is brought into the captain's cabin where Vincent is sitting in front of Jenks. Jenks explains that he needs Silver to influence several men on Flint's crew to join his crew so that he can adequately sail the ship. Silver figures out that the men who do not join Jenks's crew will be slaughtered and so Silver refuses to help. When he states his refusal, Jenks pulls out a pistol and shoots Vincent, killing him. Jenks then has Silver laid out across the table and proceeds to crush his leg with the hard end of an axe.

Aboard the ship, Jenks continues to crush Silver's leg until he gets word that the city is being successfully assaulted by Vane's men ashore. As Jenks goes to kill Silver, the men of Flint's crew smash into the captain's cabin and rescue Silver. Jenks is killed by a sword slash from Billy Bones.

Vane and Flint make it to the jetty and begin rowing towards the ship. However Rhett and his men catch up fire their muskets ineffectually. They then begin to aim a cannon at the boat, but they are then pulverized by cannon fire from the ship.

Silver is then rushed below decks to Doctor Howell who proceeds to amputate Silver's leg with the aid of Dooley and Muldoon.

Sometime later, as Silver is recovering, Flint approaches him and tells him that he has been appointed quartermaster. Silver is confused by this but Flint then explains that the men reasoned that if not for Silver's actions, they would have all been killed. Silver tells Flint that Vincent lied to them, he actually gave the gold's location to another crew and revealed this information with his dying breaths. Flint is dumbstruck and asks which crew.

Season Three

The ship is left in Nassau's harbor to serve as a floating battery in the defense of the town. When Teach arrives he is curious as to who owns the ship and Vane tells him that it belongs to his partners - Rackham and Flint.

After Woodes Rogers takes over Nassau town, all that is left of the pirate resistance are the six ships in the harbor. They then make their escape after Vane's maneuver with the fireship.

The fleet sails to Ocracoke Island, Teach's base after escaping the British Navy. They come across a Spanish merchant ship and pursue it. Once the ship is taken, Vane asks a dying Spaniard why the ship resisted when they say all six ships giving chase, including the Man of War.

The Man of War becomes Teach's flagship and he commands the pirate fleet when he sails to the Maroon Island. He is met by Rackham on the Walrus and he explains their predicament. He and Blackbeard then find common cause in gaining revenge for the death of Charles Vane. The fleet begins to sail towards the British ships under British colors. When the British flagship signals, Teach orders someone to retrieve his logbook as he possesses the proper codes. However, Rackham tells him to fly the black, by doing so they will lull the British commander into a false sense of security and underestimate the pirates. Blackbeard acquiesces and the pirate and British fleets exchange fire.

After Anne leaves with the vanguard to sneak aboard the Orion, Hornigold's ship, Teach then steers the Man of War towards the British flagship while taking heavy fire. While he remains stoic, he tells Jack that his plan better work. Anne and the vanguard succeed and they fire the Orion's stern chasers into the British flagship, devastating its gun crews. Chamberlain then orders the anchor cables to be cut to avoid being boarded by Blackbeard's crew.

Season Four

The Man of War remains under Teach's and Rackham's command and is called the Revenge. During the invasion of Nassau, the Revenge is the only ship of the fleet of four not to be grounded and is able to escape with only minor damage. Teach and Rackham order the escape to draw Rogers' sloops away from the longboats of the other ships and give the rest of the pirates a chance to make it to the fallback position on the eastern shore. Three of Rogers' sloops give chase, however the stern chasers are insufficient to hold them off and the rigging was too damaged to maneuver a broadside on them. Teach orders the gunports closed and to prepare to be boarded. Rackham fights in the vanguard with Teach and Bonny, however due to his inexperience in combat he is wounded and nearly killed. His wounds are later treated below decks by the ship's doctor before Bonny walks in and berates Jack for trying to be something he's not. To send a message to Rogers, Teach has a number of redcoat prisoners executed and sets a course for Nassau.

The next day, they drift one of the captured sloops into Nassau's harbor, the sloop is decorated with the bodies of the executed redcoats. Blackbeard then blockades the bay with the Revenge. He gives Rogers an ultimatum, hand over Eleanor Guthrie, or he will continue the blockade and execute the remaining 61 prisoners.

That night, Teach orders Bonny to lead the vanguard into Nassau to kidnap Eleanor. However Anne is tired of vengeance, and relays her sentiments to Jack. Jack then converses with Blackbeard in his cabin, speaking of their mutual fondness for Vane and how he always had the ultimate goal in mind. The Governor's sloop the Lion is then spotted sailing away from the harbor under cover of the fort's guns, Rackham convinces Teach to pursue.

After a lengthy chase, the Revenge catches up to the sloop and pummels it with cannonfire. Then, Teach and Bonny lead the vanguard aboard in longboats. On deck, only the dead and dying are present, but a trap is sprung and redcoats surprise the pirates from belowdecks. A bloody fight ensues, but when Blackbeard and Bonny are captured, Rackham raises the white flag. Rogers then leads his men aboard the Revenge and has all the remaining pirates shackled. Rogers then has Blackbeard strung up by the ankles over the side of the ship. While Rackham, Bonny, and the crew look on, Teach is callously keelhauled, dragging him under the ship covered with razor sharp barnacles. After the first pass, he’s so bloodied and scraped. The second pass sees Teach apparently dead, as his entire body is flayed, but not so; he coughs up sea water. Everyone looks on as Blackbeard’s brutalised body is dragged from the water for a third time; miraculously still alive. Woodes grand moment has been ruined, and he petulantly shoots him in the head at point blank. Rackham has been spared, as he was to be next in line. The pirate prisoners are then put in the Lion, which the Revenge tows as it sails back to Nassau.

At sea, Woodes Rogers spots and intercepts a boat that had just escaped New Providence, and learns that Nassau has fallen. He orders one of his lieutenants to take his sloop and deliver the chained up pirates to Port Royal to hang, while he heads back to Nassau on the Man O' War.

Mrs. Hudson rows out to Rogers’ ship to persuade him to sail for Port Royal, and await Eleanor Guthrie’s arrival with the gold. Rogers is less than thrilled to be asked to cut the ties with what represents his entire mission in life… the destruction of the pirate problem. Mrs. Hudson does her damnedest to convince him Eleanor is doing this out of devotion to him, but he refuses to listen and continues his approach. However, Eleanor makes her point by firing warning shots from Fort Nassau. It takes several shots to get him to leave the area… but not to Port Royal.

At sea, Rogers makes the audacious decision to sails to Spanish Cuba, despite the current state of war between England and Spain. Met by Spanish soldiers at the dock, Rogers dumps the head of Blackbeard at the lieutenant’s feet, and asks for a meeting with the governor. Raja agrees to lend him ships and soldiers in order to clear the pirates out of Nassau. The Revenge is presumably returned to the Spanish and remains in Havana.

Trivia

  • The Spanish Man O’ War appears to be an amalgamation of several historical ships. The first is a large Spanish merchant vessel from Cádiz that was brought to Nassau and made into a floating battery. The name “Revenge,” given to it in Season Four, can either be referring to the Revenge, the sloop Teach took over from Stede Bonnet, or more likely, Teach’s famous ship, the Queen Anne’s Revenge, which was originally a frigate of the French Navy before becoming a slave trader.
  • All of the books seen in the captain's cabin, El Héroe, El Sitio de Breda, La Arcadia, La Celestina, La Niña de los Embustes, Las Aventuras del Bachiller Trapaza and Livro Traças de Carpintaria, Compendio de la Arte de Navegar and El Criticón are all period accurate Spanish books (except for the Livro, which is Portuguese).
  • In season three and four the main deck layout of the Revenge changes to that of the Delicia's and the HMS Milford's, presumably because they were reusing the English warship set rather than having separate sets for English and Spanish warships.
