The Walrus Crew was the pirate crew of the Walrus during the Golden Age of Piracy. Based out of the port of Nassau on New Providence Island, under Captain James Flint's leadership they became one of the most profitable crews on the island, as well as notoriety across the New World.

The crew's banner featured a skeleton holding a sword and hourglass, all in white, on a black field.

History[]

Background[]

During the War of the Spanish Succession, Lord Thomas Hamilton, his wife Miranda, and Lieutenant James McGraw of the Royal Navy, attempted to pass a bill in Parliament to offer the pirates of Nassau a Royal Pardon if they surrendered and swore allegiance to the Crown. They were met with fierce opposition by Lord Alfred Hamilton, Thomas' father. When McGraw's affair with Thomas was discovered, Thomas was imprisoned in a mental hospital, and McGraw and Miranda were sent into exile.

The pair travelled to Nassau, arriving in the February of 1706. There, McGraw took the name "Flint." While Miranda settled on an estate in the interior of New Providence, Flint approached Hal Gates, the quartermaster of a well respected crew, and convinced him that he was a man worth propping up as captain. Flint was elected the captain of the Walrus shortly after.

By June of the same year, they captured their first significant prize. Under Flint's leadership, they were the highest earning pirate crew answering to the Guthries. Richard Guthrie and his daughter Eleanor used their family's shipping company to sell the pirate's plunder masqueraded as legitimate cargo.

At some point, Flint told his crew that they would hunt the Maria Aleyne, a ship that was laden with gold and jewels. Flint promised the crew that it would make them rich beyond their wildest dreams. They tracked the ship for months without careening or refitting. When they finally caught the ship, she refused to surrender and many pirates were killed. However, the haul that the ship yielded was nowhere near what Flint had promised. In truth, the ship carried his old enemy, Lord Alfred. Miranda had convinced Flint to go after him after they heard Thomas committed suicide.

Lord Alfred and his Young Mistress begged for their lives, promising Flint their fortune. Flint slew them anyway, and later told Gates that it was self defense, as Alfred was reaching for a weapon. Unbeknownst to Flint, Morley, a pirate under his command, witnessed the murder. He brought his concerns to Gates, but Gates told him that it was just "one rich bastard less in the world."

Morley took heed of Gates' words and brushed off the event. However, when they returned to Nassau a woman was waiting for Flint- Mrs. Barlow. The rest of the crew just assumed that she was some fancy Puritan woman that Flint was sleeping with, but Morley overheard Flint whisper to Miranda "they're dead," proving to Morley that the entire Maria Aleyne expedition was about settling some vendetta and not the money. This event, and the mystery surrounding Barlow, would sow seeds of discord in the ranks of the crew for years to come.

The crew rescued William Manderly, better known as Billy Bones, from the ship that he had been abducted and pressed into service on. He eventually became the crew's Boatswain after the previous one, Randall, became brain damaged after getting severely beaten while taking a prize. Randall was kept on as the ship's cook.

In 1715, the prizes that Flint was chasing were yielding less and less money, much to the chagrin of the crew. This led to Singleton, a challenger for the captaincy of the Walrus, gaining widespread support amongst the crew. Meanwhile, Charles Vane of the Ranger and his crew quickly proved themselves to be the Walrus Crew's equals and a bitter rivalry ensued.

Season One[]

In the spring of 1715, Captain Flint led the crew in taking Parrish's Ship, a merchant vessel with yet another disappointing haul. John Silver, a merchant sailor, claims that he is a very good cook and that he wants to join their crew, and they take him on. Gates warns Flint that Singleton has the votes to replace him, and Flint says all he needs is a few more days for a purpose unknown to the rest of the crew.

When they return to Nassau, it is revealed that Singleton's bid for the captaincy is a scheme engineered by Charles Vane's quartermaster, Jack Rackham. They hope that Singleton will prove so incompetent as captain that it will lead to widespread defection, and the Ranger will be able to take in an influx of skilled hands. Despite Gates' best efforts to buy back votes, he falls short after Singleton has Vane kill Mosiah, with whom Gates had made a deal for 9 votes.

Once aboard the ship, Gates tells Flint that it is time for the vote. Before the vote, Flint retires to his cabin for a moment, where he discovers the white feather. Flint had placed the feather in the drawer as an alarm to alert him if somebody had opened the drawer. Realizing that it is likely that a member of his own crew has the schedule, Flint devises a scheme that will hopefully help him defeat Singleton. Back up on the boat deck, Flint accuses Singleton of having undermined their effort to capture the treasure ship by stealing the schedule from the logbook. Gates explains that a conviction of theft carries with it the death sentence, as well as does a false accusation of thievery. Gates tells Singleton that he can either have a trial, which Singleton promptly rejects believing it would be rigged, or he can have a duel against his accuser. Singleton gladly accepts a duel against Flint. During the fight, Singleton initially has the upper hand, but Flint recovers after he strikes Singleton across the face with a small cannonball, the fight ends when Flint beats Singleton to a death with the cannonball.

Still hovering over the defeated Singleton, Flint pulls a piece of paper from the clothes of Singleton and hands it to Bones. Bones opens the paper and sees that it is blank. Bones's loyalty is effectively put to the test by Flint handing him the paper. Bones can either expose Flint for being a liar or can claim that it is the missing schedule, exonerating Flint. Bones chooses to stick by Flint and tells the crew that it is indeed the missing schedule. Flint then pumps up the crew when he, for the first time, is honest with them about his mission to capture the Urca de Lima. He claims that the ship is of such value that it will make them "princes of the New World". The crew, having their morale boosted, begins chanting his name in support.

Dufresne is trying to calm the crew down, who are in quite an excitable state after witnessing Singleton's beat down and hearing Flint's plan to capture the Urca de Lima. Still holding the blank page that Flint handed him, Billy Bones stands in shock wondering what he has just done by lying on Flint's behalf. In the captain's cabin, Flint explains to Bones and Gates that he knows that the thief is someone on the ship because someone had been in his room looking at the logbook to try and figure out what they had. They come to the conclusion that the only person who might have known about the page and who wasn't searched after the battle was their new cook: John Silver.

Back up on the boat deck, panicky Silver implores Dufresne to let him onto a longboat that has just left the ship heading toward shore. As this is happening, Bones and Gates arrive on deck and start moving toward Silver. Fearing that he is about to be apprehended, Silver jumps overboard, belly-flops into the water, and swims towards the longboat. As the boat approaches the shore, Silver looks back and realizes that Flint, Gates, and Bones are in their own boat chasing him. When he arrives on shore, Silver asks multiple men on the beach the directions to various locations. Thus, when Flint arrives on the beach and asks them where Silver went, they all point in different directions.

Eleanor confronts Max as she is convalescing and demands to that Max hand over the schedule. Max tries to convince Eleanor to come with her away from Nassau and start a fresh life with the money she will have earned from selling the schedule. Before they can settle the argument, Flint, Bones, and Gates arrive and Eleanor is faced with a choice: run away with Max or side with Flint. She decides to go along with Flint and forces Max into telling her the plans about the exchange. Max is devastated by Eleanor's decision and falls to the floor weeping.

Later that evening, Rackham and Vane arrive at the Wrecks looking for Silver. They are approached by a man acting as Silver's agent who asks that they hand over the pearls to him. Vane disapproves and begins screaming aloud, demanding that Silver show his face. When Silver offers no response, Vane pulls out a knife and stabs the man to death. A second old man approaches Vane from the shadows and tells him that Silver says that he can leave the pearls. Before any resolution comes of this, Billy Bones sneaks up behind Silver and fires a pistol at him. The bullet narrowly misses Silver and as he sprints away he finds himself now being chased by Bones, Flint, Vane, and Rackham. Avoiding this pursuers for some distance, Silver comes upon a group of dregs sitting by a campfire. Silver disguises himself as one of them and begins furiously studying the schedule. Once satisfied that he has it memorized, he quickly burns it. Silver continues his escape but is jumped by Flint and Bones. As they demand that he hand over the schedule, Silver confesses that he burned it and memorized the contents as a method of self-preservation.

The next day, Silver transcribes the schedule for Eleanor, Scott, Flint, Gates and Billy. However, he only writes down part of it, leaving the rest for the final leg of the journey in order to prevent Flint from killing him. Flint reluctantly accepts this. Flint also requests that Eleanor procure 12-pounder cannons for his ship, and sends Gates to secure a consort. Meanwhile, Billy is worried that there is still resentment against Flint and tries to canvas the crew. Silver, having been placed with Randall by Billy, convinces Randall to reveal that he, Morley and Turk are all that remains of the mutiny against Flint, hoping to ingratiate himself with Billy and Flint.

Gates goes to Captain Benjamin Hornigold, the Steward of Fort Nassau and an old friend of his. He makes the request that Hornigold lend him his ship and crew for Gates to captain during the hunt for the Urca. Hornigold agrees, but voices his pessimism that they are all just thieves awaiting the gallows.

Gates is approached by Rackham, who convinces him to meet with him and Vane under Eleanor's supervision. Gates then convinces Flint to sit down for the meeting because Vane's ship and crew are stronger than Hornigold's. At the tavern, the meeting gets off to a rocky start due to Flint's petulance and demanding severance over Mosiah's death. Ultimately, they agree to a deal with Eleanor as guarantor.

Later that night, it is revealed that Vane's crew have been holding Max captive and raping her. A furious Eleanor orders the crew to join Flint's crew and grant him use of their ship, or face a ban from buying or selling anything on the island. Vane is left with Jack, Anne and barely ten other men.

The next day, Billy is elected quartermaster as Gates is leaving the crew in order to captain the Ranger. He brings up that they have to careen the Walrus. However, De Groot, the Ship's Master, voices his concern that the spot Flint chose is too dangerous, and advocates scouting for a new beach. Flint responds that they don't have the time if they want to capture the Urca, and it is put to a vote where all but De Groot and Morley vote in favor of Flint's beach. The crew does however, demand that a "fuck tent" be present.

At first, it seems like the careening is going well, with Billy leading the men ahead of schedule, with even De Groot agreeing that all seems well. The only issue seems to be that Silver is a poor cook, and his undercooked pig caused several men, including Muldoon, to get diarrhea, thus requiring Flint to teach him how to cook the pig. Billy then discovers that two men, Froom and Crisp, tied one of the ropes to the wrong tree, but they ignore his order to retie it. Eventually, the winds cause the ship to start to tip over. De Groot warns that they have to cut the ropes holding it down or else they will lose the rigging. However, Randall becomes trapped under the ship, and Flint and Morley have to amputate his leg to get him out. Morley is unable to get out in time and is crushed to death.

Eleanor tried to negotiate a deal with Captain Dyfed Bryson of the Andromache, the largest of the Guthrie's ships, for him to give his 12 pounder cannons to Flint. However, Bryson reneges after Richard secretly tells him to. Flint and the crew then sail in pursuit.

Ep5-7

After a lengthy chase, the crew catches up to the Andromache. Billy informs the crew that their plan is to sail straight at them while they attack port, and have Beauclerc, their sharpshooter, shoot the helmsman so the wind and current will cause them to drift alongside the pirates, allowing them board. Billy also informs Dufresne, the accountant who has never participated in a fight, that he will have to participate. The plan goes exactly as expected, and Beauclerc expertly snipes Bryson's helmsmen, and a brutal fight ensues on deck. Several pirates are killed, and Dufresne is almost overpowered but is able to bite his assailant's throat out. When he comes to, the pirates are finishing clearing the decks of Bryson's men. However, it is discovered that there is a near impenetrable bunker deep belowdecks where Bryson and his remaining 20 men have barricaded themselves inside and cut the rudder mechanism. Furthermore, they had forewarned the HMS Scarborough where they would be. They send a Slave (Andromache) to relay all this to Flint, and he then tries to kill Flint, but is shot dead by Billy. Billy also discovers a letter written by Flint's lover, Miranda Barlow, in Bryson's cabin.

That night, the Walrus crew desperately tries to come up with ways to breach the bunker before sunrise so as to avoid the Scarborough. They paint Lars with soot and lower him belowdecks, with his mission being to throw a smoke grenade into the bunker to cause enough of a diversion to allow the vanguard to move on the bunker. However, he is spotted by Hayes and shot. Meanwhile, Billy reads Miranda's letter, which asks a judge in Boston for a pardon for Flint. Gates' next plan is to have four men dangle on ropes over the side to try and hack their way into the bunker to throw charges and cause enough confusion to allow the vanguard to force their way in. Logan argues that the plan is suicidal, and Gates punches him. Before the plan can be put in place, someone spots a signal from the slaves in the hold. The pirates then drop a tool into the hold to allow them to break their shackles. The slaves attack Bryson and his men, and open the door allowing the pirates in. The pirates then transfer most of the guns to their ship, but a powder trap left by Bryson is triggered, causing an explosion. The Walrus is forced to flee, as the Scarborough saw the explosion and begins firing at them. However, while Flint and Billy work on cutting away debris that was dragging them down, Billy falls overboard, the pirates are forced to leave him behind.

Once ashore, De Groot brings up the fact that now that Randall has one leg, it would be a fire hazard to have him work in the galley. The crew then votes to expel him. In his anger, Randall accuses Silver of having stolen the schedule in front of De Groot, Dr. Howell and Dufresne, who had been elected quartermaster. To ascertain whether or not Silver could actually memorize the schedule, they give him five minutes to memorize a page from Howell's manuals and then reproduce it. Silver then begs Randall to recant in exchange for convincing the crew to keep Randall on. Meanwhile, Dufresne, Howell and De Groot argue over whether or not to kill Randall in order to have a chance at the gold. When Silver fails the test, De Groot prepares to apprehend him, but Randall acts crazy and accuses them all of being thieves. Silver then convinces the crew to keep Randall on, with Silver promising to be his caretaker.

Gates tells Dufresne, De Groot and Dr. Howell the truth about the schedule and Singleton. The four agree that once they have the gold, they will kill Flint. The next day they depart Nassau with Gates captaining the Ranger.

Walrus crew epVIII

The pirates sail through a hurricane to get to Florida, and Silver gives the final coordinates as Division Bay. However, when they arrive they find nothing, but a Spanish Man O' War soon appears. Flint realizes that it's an escort for the Urca, and comes up with a plan to defeat it. Gates thinks all is lost and reveals his role in managing the mutiny against Flint. Flint then kills Gates, tells the crew he died of a heart attack, and begins to put his plan into place. The plan is to have the Walrus pose as a Spanish merchantman attacked by the pirates aboard the Ranger, who will sail away, luring the Spanish warship in between the two pirate vessels.

The first part of the plan works. However, Silver tells the Spanish Officer that they are a tobacco ship, which Dufresne had explicitly warned him against. Dufresne then launches his mutiny against Flint, showing the crew the letter Gates wrote detailing Flint's crimes, which include a plan to steal a portion of the gold for his own purposes. De Groot confronts Silver belowdecks at gunpoint, but Randall knocks the Ship's Master out. Silver then fires an unattended cannon, forcing Dufresne to order the gun crews to follow suit. The Ranger then comes about and fires her broadsides at the Man O' War's bow. Unfortunately, the Spanish are able to turn their broadsides on the pirates. Their cannons pummel the pirate vessels, and the Ranger's powder magazine explodes, and the ship goes down with all hands. The Walrus takes heavy damage but the crew is able to limp away and beach the ship on the shore.

When Flint wakes up after having been dragged ashore from the water, Dufresne orders that he and Silver come with him. They rendezvous with the Walrus Helmsman, who'd been posted as a lookout. There, they reveal to Flint that Silver's information had been correct, but the Urca de Lima had been wrecked on the shore by the hurricane, and the Spanish soldiers and sailors work on salvaging the gold while the Man O' War that defeated them guards the water.

Season Two[]

Crew on the beach

Dufresne offers Flint and Silver clemency if they figure out a plan to take the gold, as the crew is ready to hang both of them. Instead, Flint offers a plan to take the Spanish warship to the remaining 32 members of the crew. There are too many men on the beach, and the Spanish Man O’ War is watching over the bay, meaning there is no way of getting the gold. However, the amount of men on the beach means that the ship is running on a skeleton crew. He proposes that two men swim out to it while the sun is setting, but before the night watch arrives, eliminate the watch on the main mast and hoist a signal to the rest of the crew. Flint volunteers to be one of the first men out and asks for another. Many of the crew are still disgusted with Flint and no one volunteers except Silver.

Flint and Silver sneak aboard the ship, and they are able to kill the Lookout and signal their men, but they are captured by the Spanish. However, the rest of the crew arrives in time to free them, and they sail away with the ship after killing the skeleton crew. That night, Dufresne informs Flint and Silver that the crew voted 17-15 to commute their sentences, but the two will be expelled when they return to Nassau.

With Dufresne as acting captain, Flint and Silver are largely shunned by the crew. Silver comes up with a plan to ingratiate himself by telling the crew embarrassing pieces of gossip told to him by Randall, which he calls the Accounts of Goings-On. His first attempts talking about Dooley and Wayne only earn him a beating, but he is able to turn the crew when he tells them that Palmer had sex with the ship's dairy goat, causing the crew to beat him instead.

Meanwhile, Flint plans on becoming captain again. He tells Dufresne that he regrets killing Gates and decides to repent by giving Dufresne sound advice. He warns him to avoid tacking east around the coast to pick up a more favorable wind, as it will put them right in the common shipping lane. If they do this, the crew will want to take a prize, but are too depleted to do so. Flint urges him to focus on getting back to Nassau, where he can refit, recover and take on new men and then go back hunting.

Dufresne falls for the bait, and De Groot encourages him to take a prize to cement his leadership. They encounter an English Merchant Ship, which surrenders to the pirates after seeing them raise the Black. However, the Merchant Captain asks Dufresne if he is Flint, and when he realizes that it isn't Flint, he signals his men to attack the pirates. The vanguard is forced to retreat, and at least 7 pirates are killed. With Dufresne paralyzed by indecision, Flint steps up and tells the crew that they have sink the merchant ship or else no one will every surrender to their flag again. The crew falls in under his leadership and they sink the merchantman, and Flint is then reelected captain.

As they sail back to Nassau, Silver informs the crew during his address that they will be anchoring off the coast of the Hog, so that Flint can inform Hornigold that they are sailing a Spanish warship. Flint and Silver go into town while the rest of the men wait on the ship. Before they leave, they send Nicholas and Vincent in a boat back to Florida to learn about the Spanish soldier's routines and watch strength. In town, Flint and Silver learn that Charles Vane has taken over the fort. Flint allies himself with Hornigold in order to retake the fort, out of fear that Vane would extort them for the gold. They combine their crews, and Flint gives a speech about how the danger of Vane extorting them is too great. He gives Vane until sundown to surrender the fort or they will attack, and they anchor the warship out of range of the fort's guns.

Flint and Hornigold begin their plans to remove Vane from the fort. Scott informs him that Vane's pronouncement against Flint is working, and recruits are flooding in, pledging their services to Vane to defend or discourage any attack made on the fort. Flint then orders Scott and the others to go ashore to Nassau and sit with the captains and convince them that Vane poses a greater danger to them in the fort, able to extort whatever he wants from them. Flint says he will appeal directly to the crews on the beach in an effort to discourage more people flocking to Vane’s side. Flint sends Silver ashore to win men over for their cause.

Silver pays a Pirate Actor to pretend like he is a survivor of the Royal Lion garrison that escaped the massacre. His tale is affective in drawing a crowd. However, Silver is sidetracked when he discovers that Billy Bones has washed ashore. He and Randall bring him to a tobacco storehouse. When Billy awakes, he tells Silver to get Gates.

At their final strategy meeting, Hornigold informs them that they’ve stemmed the tide of recruits going to Vane, but division amongst the crews on the beach is still rampant. Hornigold says that they have 90 men with another 50 men pledged by additional crews. He believes that they’ll lose at least 60 men in the assault.

The combined crew opens fire on the fort. The gun crews continue to pound the fortress, taking huge chunks of wall out of it. When a sizeable breach is made, Flint calls for a cease fire and commands that the men prepare to move ashore to storm the fortress.

Silver keeps Billy prisoner out of fear that he will tell the crew that Flint pushed him into the water during the Boarding of the Andromache. Billy warns him that he should be far more afraid of the large Royal Navy garrison on Harbour Island preparing to attack them. Billy is aghast that any of them want to follow Flint after all the events that transpired, but Silver says that they all want the gold. Silver and Billy continue to argue, but Randall breaks the stalemate by acknowledging that the crew likes both of them.

Eventually, men make landfall in Nassau and begin arming themselves. Flint and Hornigold agree that they need to make their assault soon. Flint tells them to delay in order to talk with Miranda Barlow, who arrives in town as they do. She insists that Flint come and talk with her, and he does.

While Flint speaks with her, the crew restlessly waits on the beach. Logan decides to go the Inn to see Charlotte, despite the explicit rules against leaving camp, with the Inn being especially forbidden out of fear that the prostitutes would extract the location of the gold from their customers. While he is there, Charlotte tries to find Max to ask how it is best to proceed, but Anne Bonny goes in instead and kills Logan after he insults her, and then kills Charlotte when she protests.

In the Tavern, Miranda tries to convince Flint to call off the assault in favor of negotiating for the release of Abigail Ashe, and to then use her to negotiate a reconciliation with the British Empire with her father, Lord Governor Peter Ashe. Flint refuses, but after she leaves he is attacked by Vane. The two grapple for some time until Eleanor fires a shotgun over their heads. Together with Miranda and Richard Guthrie, the captains and Eleanor discuss Vane trading Abigail in exchange for Flint calling off the assault. Vane refuses and leaves angrily, followed by Eleanor, who returns and says that Vane will honor the deal.

While they wait, Billy returns to the Walrus Crew's camp, where he is enthusiastically greeted by the crew. He tells them that Flint tried to save him when he fell overboard, and also warns them about the large Royal Navy garrison on Harbour Island. Hornigold is furious when Flint informs him that they are calling off the assault, and he calls an election for the captaincy of the combined crew.

While Silver is doing a head count, Muldoon warns him that Logan is at the brothel. When Silver goes to the Inn and finds Logan dead, he fabricates a story that Logan decided to desert and run away with Charlotte to his brother in Providence rather than face attacking the fort.

As the crews prepare for the election, Dufresne divulges his fears about Flint's plans to Billy. Billy tells him a secret- he didn't escape from the Navy, he was released and offered a deal. If he is able to apprehend Flint and hand him over to Hume, he and nine men of his choosing will receive Royal Pardons. Billy and Dufresne agree that the second they doubt Flint's ability, they will take the deal.

That night, the crew gathers in the warehouse. Hornigold goes first, and gives a speech about how Flint is guilty of theft, betrayal, lies and murder. He says Flint is untrustworthy and will betray all of them if it suits him. The proceedings are interrupted when Nicholas and Vincent return with the news that the gold has been reclaimed by the Spanish. The crew argues amongst themselves for a while before Silver goes to speak on behalf of Flint. Silver points out that Flint is the only one offering them a path where they retain both their lives and their freedom, and is persuasive enough that over 70 of the 107 men to vote for Flint.

After the election concludes, Dufresne approaches Billy and tells him that Flint's plan is completely untenable and they have to take Flint down. Billy agrees and tells him to round up eight men and meet at the bluffs in an hour. When they do meet, Billy brings the rest of the crew with him. He explains that he was traumatized by the torture he endured at the hands of the British, and lied in order to escape. Furthermore, he says that he would fight to the death to ensure that none of his brothers would have to suffer what he did and that none of them are safe until all of them are safe. Dufresne and his eight men are subsequently banished.

Eleanor follows through on her promise and delivers Abigail Ashe to the Tavern. Afterwards, the crew sets sail for Charles Town.
