The Walrus Crewman is a pirate serving under the command of Captain Flint aboard the Walrus.

Biography[]

Season One[]

The Crewman participates in the boarding of Parrish’s Ship. After the battle concludes, the pirates lash Captain Parrish to the mast and prepare to torture him under Singleton’s lead. One has a kit of torture instrument, and the pirate jeers as his comrade waves the hook at Parrish. Eventually, the Walrus crew is forced to flee when the HMS Scarborough, a Royal Navy man of war, is spotted nearby.

The pirate is present for the vote called by Singleton to challenge Flint for the captaincy of the Walrus. Flint apologizes for withholding information from the crew, but tells them that it was because he had them hunting a prize so massive that it would change the nature of their world. However, someone learned of his and tore the page from Parrish’s log necessary to catch it. Flint then outright accuses Singleton, saying he stoked the crew’s resentment to cover up his crime. Singleton denies the charges, and opts for trial by combat against Flint instead of one before Gates as judge. Flint and Singleton duel, and the two are relatively evenly matched, with Flint being somewhat out of practice and Singleton using brute strength against him. The pirate cheers as the two fight, but in the end Flint is able to kill Singleton, and he reveals that the prize they are chasing is the Urca de Lima, a Spanish treasure galleon carrying five million dollars worth of Spanish gold. The crew then cheers and unanimously reelects Flint[1].

The pirate and the rest of the crew begin to party on the ship as they think of the things they will spend the money on. Dufresne tries to dissuade them, but they go ashore and continue their festivities at the Tavern and the Inn[2].

The crew spends some more time ashore preparing for their voyage[3]. After Eleanor forces the crew of the Ranger to abandon Vane and to agree to serve as consort to Flint in the hunt for the Urca, Billy Bones is voted in as the new quartermaster, to replace Gates who is going over to the Ranger. Afterwards, they bring up the issue of careening. Flint wants them to careen the ship at a spot he found on the island, but De Groot thinks that it is unsuitable and could lead to catastrophe. Flint counters that the delay could mean they miss their window to capture the Urca. The crew puts it to a vote and they vote overwhelmingly in favor of Flint, with Morley and De Groot dissenting. The crew careens the ship with seeming speed and success, however, when the wind starts blowing the ship becomes unstable and they are forced to cut the ropes holding the ship down. During the chaos, Randall becomes pinned beneath the ship after trying to rescue his cat. Flint and Morley are forced to cut off his leg to save him, but Morley is caught as the ship rolls over and is crushed to death[4].

Ep5-7

After Captain Dyfed Bryson of the Andromache flees Nassau instead of handing over his 12 pounder cannons, Flint leads the Walrus in pursuit. After a lengthy chase, they finally catch up to the Andromache. Billy then gathers the crew and informs them of the battle plan. They will sail straight at the Andromache when she turns to attack, and Beauclerc, their sharpshooter, will shoot the Andromache’s helmsman, allowing the current to push the Andromache alongside the Walrus, allowing them to board. As the Walrus draws closer, the Crewman, Dufresne and others place sandbags on the gunwales. The Andromache then begins to turn port to attack them, as expected. Bryson and his men fire several volleys from their cannons at the pirates before Beauclerc kills their helmsmen, causing the ship to drift. The Crewman waits in the well deck with the rest of the boarding party while they duck down to avoid the musket fire from Bryson’s men. Billy then leads the men in binding the ships together with grappling hooks and over the side of the Andromache. A fierce battle ensues, but ultimately the pirates prevail. However, Bryson retreats with 20 of his men into a reinforced bunker deep belowdecks. He sends a Slave from the hold up to deliver a message to Flint. When the Slave arrives on the main deck, the Crewman watches as he tells them that the Scarborough is on its way, Bryson having informed Captain Hume of their route. Sure enough, the Scarborough is spotted on the horizon, and the Slave charges at Flint with a grenade, but is killed by Billy before he can do any harm[5].

The crew devises a plan to cover Lars in soot and send him to the lower deck with the bunker, where he is to approach the bunker with a smoke bomb. Upon shoving the grenade into the murder hole, the vanguard would then try and breach the door while Bryson’s crew is choking on the smoke. Lars is able to get close to the bunker but is shot by Hayes. Gates then comes up with the idea to have four men dangle on ropes and breach the bunker from the side of the hull in order to get explosive charges through the hole to cause a diversion. When no one volunteers, Flint orders Logan, Paxton, Bobby and Dooley to do it and Logan dissents. Gates then punches Logan, reminding the crew that the captain’s orders are law when in battle. The crew then notices a rag sticking out through a hole and realize that there are slaves in the hold, and lower a tool into the hold to help the slaves break their chains and begin hacking at the deck with axes to cover up the sound of breaking chains. With the help of the slaves, they are able to kill Bryson’s crew and move most of the cannons onto the Walrus. However, they are forced to flee when an explosive trap set by Bryson is set off by accident, revealing their location to the Scarborough. During their escape, the ship is hit by shots from the Scarborough’s cannons, knocking Billy overboard[6].

After returning to Nassau, the crew elects Dufresne as quartermaster in Billy’s stead, shaving his head and giving him a shark’s mouth tattoo. After restocking on supplies, the crew then sets sail for Florida to hunt the Urca[7].

The crew sails through a hurricane to get to Florida. When they arrive at Division Bay, Captain Flint gives a speech to the assembled crew. Flint informs the crew that they will sail towards the Urca under Spanish colors, but it will likely only buy them a few hundred yards before the galleon opened fire. He warns the crew that it will be the fight of their lives, but on the other side lies paradise. However, no ship is to be found in the bay. Soon, a Spanish Man O' War to the south. Flint devises a plan to have the anchored Walrus pose as a Spanish merchant ship attacked by the Ranger, which will sail away, luring the warship between the two ships and allowing the pirates to hammer her at both bow and stern. To that end, he orders the Ranger signaled to fire two shots over the bow while sailing away flying the Black and he orders De Groot to drop anchor. Gates then drags Flint into his cabin to talk further. When Flint exits, he tells the crew that Gates died of a heart attack before ordering Logan to signal Thompson aboard the Ranger that he is in command and to turn hard to port and fire on the Spanish when the Walrus does. When the warship arrives, most of the crew members hide in the gun deck, while Silvercommunicates with the Spanish Officer. Under Flint's instructions, Silver says that they are the Cazadora, a tobacco ship from St. Augustine. Satisfied with this explanation, the warship pursues the Ranger.

Dufresne aiming at Flint

Before they can fire on the warship, Dufresne launches his mutiny and reveals Flint's crimes to the crew. The Crew Mate watches as Dufresne gives Logan a letter Gates wrote detailing the captain's misdeeds. Logan then acknowledges that the letter matches Gates' handwriting. The Crew Mate Flint attempts to fire a cannon himself, but is shot in the shoulder by Dufresne. Silver then uses the distraction to fire a cannon at the Man O' War, which returns fire. Dufresne then has the gun crews fire. However, the Spanish Man O' War successfully turns its broadsides on the pirate ships,  pummeling them with cannon-fire. Over half the Walrus crew is killed and the Ranger goes down with all hands. The survivors of the Walrus are able to beach the ship on the shores of Florida. However, it is revealed that the Urca was wrecked in the hurricane on a nearby beach, and the Spanish Man O’ War is guarding it[8].

Season Two[]

The pirate survives the disastrous battle with the Spanish Man O’ War. He reacts with anger to Flint’s plan to take the warship for themselves, but Dufresne persuades the crew to listen. Flint’s plan entails himself and another man swimming to the lightly held ship, and eliminating the mainmast watch to signal the rest of the pirates to board. Silver volunteers to be the second man and the crew agrees to the plan. Flint and Silver are captured, but they were able to hoist the signal in time and the rest of the crew arrives and takes the ship.[9]

As the crew sails back to Nassau in the Man O’ War, they spot a nearby English Merchant Ship. Dufresne asks the crew if they’re up for some hunting, and the Crewman and the rest of the crew yell in assent. They hail the merchantman and raise the Black, and their quarry surrenders. Dufresne leads the vanguard aboard while the Crewman remains on the Man O’ War with the rest of the crew. However, the Merchant Captain realizes Dufresne isn’t Flint and orders his men to attack the pirates. The vanguard is overwhelmed and forced to retreat. Dufresne is paralyzed with indecision, so Flint steps up and orders the crew to sink the merchant vessel, warning that if they escape no one will ever surrender to the Walrus Crew’s flag again. The crew follows his orders, sinking the merchant ship. That night, Flint is reelected captain[10].

Crewman s2e3

As they approach New Providence, Silver gives an Account of Goings-On, where the crew jeers at Joji for masturbating on the figurehead. He then informs them that Flint and Dufresne have chosen a spot northwest of Hog Island for their anchorage, well away from the bay. Dooley objects to the lack of vote and voices his displeasure with Flint once again skirting the rules and his desire to go home. Silver explains that Flint and Dufresne thought it obvious that they would have to go ashore and warn Captain Hornigold in Fort Nassau, whose job is to defend the bay from Spanish warships, that they would be sailing one into the bay. Dooley remains angry, but is calmed down by Logan. That night, Flint gives a speech to the crew where he announces that they are partnering with Captain Hornigold and his crew in order to oust Charles Vane and his men from the fort, saying that they pose a danger to them and would certainly extort the gold from them if they succeed in taking it[11].

The Crewman is present during a meeting of the officers of the combined crew in order to plan their attack on Fort Nassau. However, Eleanor Guthrie arrives with Vane’s reply to Flint’s ultimatum, and he orders them to give them the room[12].

Ultimately, Vane ignores the ultimatum, and Flint orders the crew to open fire. The pirate mans one of the gun crews while they use the cannons to hammer the fort’s walls. Once a sizable breach is made in the walls, Flint orders the gun crews to cease fire. The crew then lands on the beach, but when Miranda asks to speak with Flint the crew is ordered to wait on the beach[13].

While waiting for Flint to return from the Tavern to begin the final attack, the pirate waits on the beach with the rest of the crew, stabbing his sword into the sand out of boredom. The Crewman is overjoyed to see that Billy Bones is alive, and listens to him as he talks about his captivity under the Royal Navy. Dufresne then asks him that they all want to know if Flint had a hand in his fall from the Walrus after the Boarding of the Andromache. Billy tells them that Flint tried to save him but couldn’t. When Flint returns, he embraces Billy before informing the crew that circumstances have changed, causing him to call off the attack on the fort and Hornigold to call for an election[14].

That night, the combined crew gathers in the Guthrie Warehouse for the election. Hornigold gives a speech where he tells the crew that Flint will always promise them things in the future in order to distract them from his lies and deceit in the present, and that Flint cannot be trusted. The proceedings are then interrupted by the arrival of Vincent and Nicholas, the lookouts sent to watch over the Urca de Lima wreck and the gold arrive with the news that the gold has been reclaimed by the Spanish. Flint then sends Silver to speak for him. Silver  tells them that without the gold, Flint is the only one who offers them a path forward. They can live without fear of being caught by the law, and have no need to apologize for anything they've done. The Crewman ultimately sides with Flint, along with over 70 of the 108 men[15].

The crew sails to Charles Town. En route, Silver gives an Account of Goings-On where he tells them about the first time he saw Charles Town and how he was awed by the fleet and walls defending the city. He also warns that the people of the city will be incredibly hostile towards them, and they will all need to be focused on helping Flint. During the voyage, Nicholas dies after a fall from the mast and is buried at sea. When they arrive in Charles Town Harbor, they stay out of range of the Battery, and Flint goes ashore with Abigail and Miranda Barlow while the rest of the men wait on the ship[16].

The next night, while the crew is relaxing on deck they are attacked by Charles Vane and his men. They try to resist, killing a number of Vane’s men but they are overwhelmed and subdued. Over twenty of their men are killed, including Randall and Joshua. The Crewman, along with the remaining 50 or so men are shackled and placed in the gun deck. Before Vane can sail away though, Silver, who evaded capture, cuts the forestay, destabilizing the foremast and making sailing away impossible before he is caught. However, a boat from the Charles Town Fleet arrives and the Boat Captain informs them that Flint has been arrested, unaware of what has transpired on the ship, and that the pirates have until the trial’s conclusion to leave, or their ship will be seized or sunk. Vane tells his crew that Nassau is strongest when feared, and they cannot afford the statement of one of her most feared captains swinging over Charles Town. He then resolves to rescue Flint[17].

After Vane leaves to rescue Flint with half of his men, the ship is left under Jenks’ command. Eventually, he decides to flee to avoid being killed or captured by the Carolina Militia. However, he lacks enough men to sail the ship. He sends his men to retrieve John Silver, causing the Walrus men to begin fighting with the Baymen, however they relent after Jenks’ men threaten to open fire. While Silver is tortured for names of men willing to help Jenks, the Walrus men free themselves with the keys they stole during the fight from the Bayman Lieutenant and take the ship back from Vane’s men. Under Billy’s leadership, they rescue Silver and sink the Charles Town Fleet. Flint, Vane and his men then return, and Flint takes command and orders them to destroy the rest of the city. On the way back to Nassau, the crew elects Silver as quartermaster, for his actions in Charles Town[18].

Season Three[]

After the events of Charles Town, Flint declares that any magistrate in the New World that hangs men for piracy will be visited by him. The crew sacks Bridgetown, St. Kitts, Nevis and Martinique as a result. After sacking Bath, they find the Straight Arrow at anchor flying the Black and the crew agrees to investigate. However, it is revealed to be a trap, and they find themselves under the pursuit of a British ship, who has the weather gauge, and with a storm to the south and land to the west, there is no point where they can outrun her. As they try to sail away, the ship catches up to them and it is revealed to be captained by Benjamin Hornigold. He offers them the same deal he offered Hallendale’s crew: surrender and receive a Royal Pardon, or die. Flint gives a speech to the crew, declaring it to be the act of a coward to pardon something one fears, encouraging the crew to resist. Due to Hornigold’s superior position however, they cannot simply fight him and instead must sail into the storm in the hope of shaking him off. As they make their run for it, the ship is hit by several shots from the Orion’s cannons[19].

As they sail deeper into the storm, the Crewman and Wayne man the bilge pump in order to make sure the ship doesn’t take on too much water. As they sail deeper into the storm, the halyard for the t’gallants becomes stuck, and the wind causes the ship to nearly capsize. To right the ship, Flint is forced to cut away the the tops of the main and fore masts. Flint then sends everyone belowdecks while he continues to steer the ship so the storm doesn’t blow them back to Hornigold. Once the storm subsides, the crew finds themselves becalmed in the Sargasso Sea, with little food or water[20].

Crewman starving

The crew spends three weeks starving in the Doldrums, heavily rationing their food and relying on the catch from the eel nets. On day 18, the guards for the food stores, Palmer and Oates, each accuse the other of stealing a full day’s rations. The two are brought before Silver by the crew. The Crewman watches as both deny the charges after Silver begs the guilty party to come forward. Flint then walks up to them and shoots Palmer, much to everyone’s shock, and then reloads and shoots Oates. On day 21, the crew spots a floating whale carcass nearby. Flint and Silver row out to it but find it rotted beyond edibility. However, they catch several sharks feeding on the carcass, saving the crew. Shortly thereafter, the wind returns, and the crew is able to make landfall on an island[21].

The crew is captured by the Maroons that inhabit the island, and forced to march inland to the Maroon Camp. Once there, Flint and Silver tell the Maroon Queen how they arrived at the island by accident. The Queen orders the crew to be imprisoned in cages, and has four men tortured to ensure the story is true[22].

The next day, a wounded Mr. Scott is brought to the camp, and it is revealed that he is the Queen’s husband, having used his position in Nassau for years to supply the Camp. Flint is eventually able to negotiate a deal with the Queen, where the Walrus Crew and Maroons join forces to reclaim Nassau, and from there to free the New World from colonial rule[23].

After the crew is freed, they sail to Ocracoke Island to reclaim the Pirate Fleet from Edward Teach, who had taken command of it in Flint’s absence. Flint and Teach are unable to reach an agreement over the fleet, so they agree to a duel. The Crewman watches from the sidelines as Flint and Teach fire their pistols at each other. Flint hits Teach who goes down. However, he rises to his feet, the shot only having grazed his face. The two then draw their swords and charge each other. As it goes on, Flint’s exhaustion from his recent ordeals catches up to him and he is disarmed. Before Teach can finish him off, Charles Vane intervenes, driving Teach away from Flint. Teach then orders them to leave his island. The crew, plus Vane, then sail back to the Maroon Island[24].

At the Maroon Camp, a plan is formed to steal the cache and rescue Jack Rackham in order to lure Governor Rogers’ forces to the island, a battlefield that is advantageous to the pirates and Maroons. They travel to Nassau, where Silver proclaims Flint’s return while Madi procures a stockpile of weapons from her father’s agents. The next morning, the ship goes to the eastern shore of the island to pick up recruits, and they find Woodes Rogers waiting in a tent under a white flag, and Flint goes ashore to parley with him[25].

The crew pretends to sail away but in truth waits off the coast for the vanguard to return from rescuing Jack and the cache. While they are successful, Vane is captured by the Governor’s men, so Billy stays behind to lead the efforts to rescue him[26].

The Walrus is chased by Hornigold back to the Maroon Island, where under Silver’s suggestion, they undertake a risky maneuver in shallow water to rapidly turn the ship’s broadsides on Hornigold, causing him to flee. The crew then move ashore. At the camp, they hear Kofi announce the death of Mr. Scott, and attend his funeral[27].

Crewman aiming

During the Battle of the Maroon Island, the Crewman serves on the front lines of the defenses on the beach. The British fleet pummels the pirates and the Maroons with their cannons before deploying the infantry force ashore. The pirates fire volleys from their muskets and rifles, but the tide turns when the Redcoats bring their mortars to bear on the pirates. With no way to counter their artillery, Flint is forced to call for a retreat. The pirate is captured with a handful of his brethren. While the British plot their next move, Dobbs surrenders himself, having been supposed to kill Benjamin Hornigold. Dobbs offers to lead the British to the Maroon Camp. Hornigold has Cardiff retrieve a Pirate Prisoner and orders Dobbs to shoot him to prove his loyalty. Dobbs kills him, while the pirate and the rest of the prisoners watch. However, the prisoners are freed once the rest of the pirate and Maroon forces launch a devastating counterattack[28].

Season Four[]

Months after the Battle at the Maroon Island, the Pirate Fleet launches its invasion of Nassau. The Walrus Crewman is on the Walrus as it enters the bay, but the ship is soon grounded along with two other ships after running aground on Scuttled Ships. Rogers’ soldiers then begin firing Fort Nassau’s cannons at the grounded ships. Flint tries to counterattack by having the crew reset the sails so the wind will elevate their starboard side high enough so that they can fire their cannons back at the fort. However, it is not enough and Flint is forced to command everyone to abandon ship. The pirate makes it ashore, but is captured by Rogers’ forces. As he sits with fellow captives, Lieutenant Kendrick brings nine more captives, including De Groot. Rogers asks him to reveal Flint’s contingency plans, but refuses. Berringer then cuts off De Groot’s ear, as  revenge for the similar mutilation that his dead men faced at the hands of the Maroon children after the battle[29].

The pirate is brought to be hanged in Nassau’s square, and watches as Dr. Howell and two others are hanged. However, before Berringer can have the next three executed, Captain Flint and Long John Silver and their men arrive. Soon, they are joined by the citizens of Nassau fed up with Berringer’s rule by fear, and they overpower the Redcoats and retake Nassau Town[30]. The pirate is freed, arms himself, and joins Flint, Silver and Madi in setting up a command center in the Governor’s Mansion[31].

Crewman s4e5

After the Fall of Nassau, Flint makes a deal with Eleanor Guthrie to exchange the cache of gems for her and Rogers surrender. Kofi is sent in a ketch to retrieve the cache from the Maroon Island. Billy Bones posts the pirate as a lookout to watch for the returning ship. He spots a two masted vessel approaching the island and flying no colors, and informs Billy and Silver[32].

The Pirate survives the Spanish Sack of Nassau, escaping on the Walrus. They arrive at the Maroon Island and are surprised to find a number of vessels anchored off the coast. At the Maroon Camp, they find it filled with pirates and Maroons from across the New World, eager to join the fight against colonial rule after hearing of the Fall of Nassau[33]. The next day, they hold a strategy meeting to discuss first strikes. The pirate listens as the New England Pirate Captain and Jamaican Maroon Chief detail the defenses of St. Ann’s Bay, as well as the recent news that much of Barbados has fallen to a slave rebellion. Flint believes that if they can recruit 1/3 slaves in Barbados, they will have enough men and ships to sack Boston. This causes Julius to speak up, who says that they are all fools if they follow Flint’s path, and voices his belief that the pirates will sell the Maroons back into slavery at the first chance they get. When Silver begins arguing heatedly with him, the Maroon Queen arrives and diffuses the situation[34].

When Madi is revealed to be alive and held for ransom by Governor Rogers, the crew sails back to Nassau to rescue her rather than use the cache of gems as payment. However, Rogers, with Billy’s help, anticipates this and captures their reconnaissance team led by Kofi. After executing Kofi and his men, Silver reveals that he has the cache, and Rogers spares Madi and sails to Skeleton Island. On the way to Skeleton Island, the Crewman speaks with Williamson belowdecks during dinner[35].

While waiting for John Silver and his hunting party to return from the island with the cache that Flint stole, the stern is set on fire. The crew is forced to abandon ship, and as they swim for safety, they are attacked by Governor Rogers and his men in longboats. As the Crewman is not seen again, it is likely he is killed in this battle[36].
