Wapping is a district in East London known for being a major dockside district, as well as the place where maritime criminals such as pirates are hanged.

History[]

Season Two[]

In a flashback to 1705, Lieutenant James McGraw takes Lord Thomas Hamilton to the hanging of a pirate in Wapping. McGraw asks if Hamilton has ever seen a hanging and Hamilton says he has not. McGraw explains the pirate is named Davey, and is accused of high seas piracy, treason, the same charges as the last person to be hanged there and the same as the next. The pirate is asked if he wants to confess and repent in the eyes of God and Queen Anne. The pirate responds by shouting "suck my cock" at the crowd. Hamilton assumes he is supposed to glean from this that the pirates of New Providence Island are incorrigible and dedicated to mayhem and Hamilton's endeavor to reform them is doomed from the beginning. McGraw tells him it isn't the pirate he wants Hamilton to watch, it's the cheering crowd.

Wapping Execution Dock

Lieutenant McGraw and Lord Hamilton watch an execution in Wapping.

McGraw tells Hamilton that civilization needs its monsters. Hamilton asks if he thinks Whitehall wants piracy to flourish in the Bahamas. McGraw says they don't want it to flourish, but they are well aware of the cost associated with fighting it.

Season Three[]

Woodes Rogers threatens Eleanor Guthrie that the moment he thinks she is no longer necessary to his endeavor, she will be shipped back to London and swing over Wapping.

Quotes[]

"The moment I believe you are no longer necessary to this endeavor, you go on that ship, that ship turns back to London and shortly thereafter you swing over Wapping."- Woodes Rogers to Eleanor Guthrie in XX.

Trivia[]

  • In real life, Wapping was home to Execution Dock, where pirates, smugglers and other maritime criminals were executed. The most famous pirate executed there was Captain William Kidd, who was originally a privateer before being denounced as a pirate. Captain Kidd became a subject of legend after his death due to rumors that he left behind a hoard of buried treasure.
